We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

You will be a key member of the Council’s Fleet team, responsible for keeping our vehicles, plant and equipment safe, reliable, and ready for use. Through your work, you will play a vital role in supporting frontline operational teams, helping to ensure essential Council services are delivered efficiently to our communities.

Working as part of a supportive and skilled team, you will contribute to the repair, maintenance, and upkeep of a diverse fleet, taking pride in the quality of your work and the impact it has on day-to-day service delivery.

The role operates on a shift rota and includes evening working, bank holidays, and alternative working arrangements over the Christmas and Easter periods. This flexibility is essential to maintaining continuous fleet availability and supporting critical services yearround.

About you:

You will take ownership of your work, demonstrating positive and proactive leadership alongside high levels of productivity and a commitment to meeting deadlines.

The role requires experience of working within a transport or fleet environment, supported by a relevant qualification such as an NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds in Motor Vehicle Engineering (or equivalent).

You will also hold a minimum Category C UK driving licence, enabling you to support the operational needs of the service.

This role calls for strong decision-making skills and the ability to analyse problems, identify practical solutions, and introduce innovative approaches that have a positive impact on service delivery.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

Fleet Services play a vital role in keeping the Council moving. We are responsible for managing a diverse fleet of vehicles and plant, ensuring they are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. This includes overseeing maintenance and repair schedules, vehicle procurement, and supporting high standards of performance across both vehicles and drivers.

The team works at pace and to best practice standards, with a strong focus on productivity and quality. By doing so, Fleet Services ensures that frontline operational teams have reliable resources available to deliver essential services to residents across the borough.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community.
