About Us:
THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF GIRO’S PERSUASIVE POWERS
The Adult Services team in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. We love it when our work touches lives.
Take Stepping to the Beat, our 3k walk, jog or run for people with learning or physical disabilities or Autism, their families and carers. It’s a life-affirming, music-based event Coreen and Claudia are massively proud of – and they were keen for people to spread the word. So, imagine how thrilled they were when one of our residents, Giro, did just that. Advocating for people with disabilities at a planning meeting for transport in London, he was proudly wearing his event medal. And he decided to use it to encourage others. As he passed it around the room, Giro inspired lots more people with disabilities to get involved. Infectious enthusiasm goes a long way here.

The Role:
As a Support Worker with our Adult Services Directorate, you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. We are a leading in-house and community-based service, and work with adults and young people with learning disabilities, autism and other challenging conditions, and when you join us you’ll focus on ensuring that each customer is central to the decisions that are made about their life. Offering support and encouragement relating to activities and employment opportunities that maximise choice and participation, and making an important contribution to empathetic, person-centred planning, you’ll also ensure that customers can use their preferred method of communication while participating in the decisions that effect them.
Committed to liaising with the significant people in each customer’s circle, and providing thoughtful and caring support in areas of intimate and personal care, including manual handling, toileting, bathing, dressing, eating, drinking and the administration of medication, you’ll also support people with physical disabilities, including those in wheelchairs. Acting as an escort and – if you hold a UK driving licence – a driver, we’ll expect you to report to your manager anything that might affect the health and safety of any customer, colleague or member of the public.
You’ll be expected to undertake a number of administrative tasks, including the completion of session evaluations, communication plans and risk assessments, and when required, contribute to problem solving. Committed to using confidentiality guidelines when handling customers’ information, and dedicated to promoting the rights of everyone you work with, you’ll make an important contribution to team planning and service development, and ensure that support is person-centred. Evaluating one-to-one and group sessions, and keeping up to speed with the latest legislation, policies and safeguarding initiatives, we’ll also expect you to attend regular supervision and performance appraisals, and commit to your own learning and development.
Please refer to the Job Description for more information.
About You:
To be a success in this important role, you should have well developed experience of working with people with complex and enduring support needs, and be capable of planning and contributing to individual support and group activities that meet individual, person-centred requirements. And of course it’s vital that you possess good knowledge of current legislation relating to capacity, consent and safeguarding, and a strong commitment to the promotion of individual equity, diversity and human rights.
A friendly, approachable and collaborative team worker, you should be ready to use your strong communication skills as you work in partnership with our customers, their carers, case managers, health professionals and agencies. We’ll also expect you to be dedicated to empowering the people you’re supporting, and with this in mind should be capable of providing personal and intimate care, including moving and handling when required.
It’s important that you have the skills to work with customers whose behaviour may cause harm to themselves, other people or the environment, and the interpersonal skills necessary to guide more junior members of staff, sharing knowledge and expertise with the team to facilitate individual development. A confident user of IT systems and capable of keeping accurate records and carrying out assessments, you should also possess a good level of written English and basic financial skills. A full UK driving licence would be desirable, as would an NVQ, Diploma or comparable qualification in Social Care at Level 3, and as you may have to work some evenings and weekends, you should be both flexible and adaptable. You should also be aware that this is a fixed term contract for maternity cover.
