About Us:
THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KAKOLI’S PASSION AND DRIVE
Children’s Services in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where inspirational people like Kakoli are dedicated to encouraging everyone they work with to be the very best they can be.
Ever since she was a child, Kakoli has believed that children are the ones who’ll change the world for the better. Who’ll create the future we all wish for. And she always knew her calling was to get on the front line and help those who might not be as fortunate as herself.
Driven and passionate about making a difference, she first joined Westminster as a Social Work Assistant, and her managers immediately saw she had huge potential, so they encouraged her to apply to study for a degree in social work. She passed with flying colours, and over the next fourteen years worked as a frontline Social Worker, a Senior Social Worker, a Deputy Service Manager and is now one of our Service Managers.
Kakoli’s vision is as clear now as it was all those years ago – to encourage and support children, and help them grow in safe, vibrant communities. Her achievements are many, but she’s most proud of the fact that these days Westminster doesn’t ‘do things for families’ but ‘does things with families’. And she believes this huge but subtle difference to the way we work has allowed thousands of children in Westminster to fulfil their potential and live their dreams.
The Role:
As a Social Worker, you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. In Westminster Children’s Services, you’ll be part of a team that works every day to keep children and young people safe, support families and improve outcomes across the borough.
You’ll take responsibility for allocated and newly referred cases, providing social work support in line with national statutory guidance and local departmental policy. This means understanding each child’s situation, identifying risks and strengths, and putting the right safeguarding plans and support in place.
The work can be challenging, and the needs of the children and families you support may be complex. But it is also deeply meaningful. You’ll have the opportunity to work with different communities and cultures, support some of Westminster’s most vulnerable children and families, and make a difference that can be genuinely life-changing.
You won’t be doing this alone. You’ll join a diverse team that works closely together and supports each other. With regular supervision, guidance from committed managers and relatively low caseloads compared to other London boroughs, you’ll have the space and support to do high-quality work.
You’ll also be joining a service that values your perspective and wants you to grow. Westminster is committed to being an inclusive workplace that reflects the communities we serve, with flexible working arrangements and an environment where people are encouraged to learn, develop and be their best.
This is a role for someone who wants to make a real difference – helping children feel safer, families feel stronger, and communities feel better supported.
Please refer to the Job Description for more information.
About You:
You’ll have experience working with vulnerable children and families, ideally in a local authority children’s services setting. You’ll understand how to work in line with statutory guidance and the Children Act 1989 and 2004, with experience in areas such as Early Help, Child in Need, child protection, care proceedings, permanency care planning or leaving care.
You’ll be comfortable working directly with children and young people of different ages, needs and backgrounds, including those with challenging behaviours and underlying vulnerabilities. You’ll also understand how to support families dealing with complex issues, helping them access the right services and resources to improve outcomes.
A big part of the role is building trust. You’ll be able to engage families from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, listen carefully and work with them in a way that feels respectful, honest and purposeful. You’ll know how to balance empathy with clear boundaries, especially when risks are high.
You’ll also work closely with other professionals to safeguard children, manage risk and support change. Confident in assessing needs, you’ll analyse complex information and create SMART plans that are realistic, focused and in the best interests of the child.
Clear communication will matter every day. You’ll have strong written and spoken English, with the ability to write structured reports that meet statutory expectations and deadlines. You’ll also be able to communicate clearly with families, colleagues and wider professional networks.
Organised and able to manage your time well, you’ll balance direct work with children and families, record keeping and statutory processes. Experience of using systemic therapeutic ideas, Signs of Safety or systemic models of intervention would be helpful, but what matters most is that you bring a resilient approach to the work.
