Be a key support to Local Democracy – Political Advisor to the Labour Group

  • Are you a committed and active, organiser, staffer, volunteer or officer working for the Labour Party nationally, in parliament or in local government?
  • Do you enjoy working in a high-profile, fast-paced and challenging political environment?
  • Are you an organised and highly-motivated multi-tasker capable of running a ‘one person’ officer handling everything that comes at you whilst only having part-time hours available to get everything done?
  • Would you enjoy the challenge of ensuring the Council’s opposition Labour Group can exert maximum influence to support residents, the Council and further the group’s aims and priorities?
  • Are you a confident builder of relationships with your political group and good at engaging and working with people across the Council (including the administration, and the majority and other minority groups), with stakeholders and the public?

The Role

As the political advisor to the Opposition Labour Group, you will provide sole administrative, policy and communications support to the Group Leadership and Members. The role will be wide ranging and challenging but will include; coordinating meetings, drafting briefings and reports, and generally supporting the Group’s work at the Council.  

You will act as the key link between your group, Members generally, senior officers and external stakeholders and partners. The role involves working on sensitive and complex issues in a dynamic political environment where your drive and determination will be vital in ensuring you can be effective in your many responsibilities.

What we are looking for

You will be an organised and confident and energetic individual, able to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines. You will have strong written and verbal communication skills, and produce clear, high-quality materials.

You will be able to work independently, think critically and provide sound advice. Although you will have good networking and collaboration skills, much of your work will be your individual responsibility and you must have the drive and determination to make an impact as the support for a minority group on the Council.

Further Role Details:

  • The job is primarily based at Whitechapel Town Hall, 160 Whitechapel Road, E1 1BJ
  • Evening and some weekend work is required.
  • Hybrid working is available although significant time in the office will be required.
  • Your political affiliations, experience and interests will be discussed at interview.
  • The post is politically restricted.
