Housing Officer
Tower Hamlets Council
Are you passionate about making a real difference in people’s lives? We are seeking a dedicated Housing Officer to join our frontline team, working directly with residents in temporary accommodation. This is a resident-facing role at the heart of our service, helping households move from temporary accommodation into more settled, long-term homes.
You will be the first point of contact for your resident portfolio, providing a full housing management service to homeless households. From accompanied viewings and property inspections, to supporting move-on from accommodation, you will ensure regular contact and high-quality support throughout their journey.
The service is currently undergoing a transformation programme aimed at improving its structure, with a renewed focus on operational efficiency and customer outcomes. This initiative is designed to streamline processes, enhance service delivery, and ensure that our housing and procurement operations are better aligned with the needs of our residents and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Frontline Resident Support: Build positive relationships with residents, providing advice and support to help them secure permanent accommodation and sustain their tenancies.
- Property Inspections: Inspect properties to confirm occupancy and ensure they remain in a good state of repair, addressing any issues promptly and liaising with landlords and tenants as needed.
- Move-On Coordination: Work proactively to move households from temporary accommodation into settled homes, supporting vulnerable applicants and guiding them through the process.
- Tenancy Management: Enforce licence conditions, and take appropriate action on breaches, including anti-social behaviour or property standards.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with landlords, internal teams, and external agencies to ensure efficient allocation and management of properties, minimising void periods and supporting council priorities.
- Equality & Inclusion: Deliver services in a non-discriminatory, inclusive manner, supporting the council’s values and priorities.
What We are Looking For
- Experience working with customers in a housing or similar service, ideally in a demanding public-facing environment.
- Strong knowledge and experience of housing management, tenancy and property management, and welfare benefits.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and delivering outstanding customer service.
- Ability to travel for property inspections, with properties being in the borough and outside of the borough/outside London. (you will be allocated a patch)
Our Benefits
-
Competitive salary plus allowances (if applicable).
-
Local Government Pension Scheme membership.
-
Generous annual leave: 29 days, rising to 33 with 5+ years’ service, plus bank holidays and 3 additional days at Christmas.
-
Flexible and agile working to support work–life balance.
-
Staff money-saving schemes (e.g., rent deposit loans, season ticket loans).
-
Learning and development opportunities through our Learning Academy, with clear career development and leadership pathways.
