We have an exciting opportunity for the role of Deputy Head of the Mayor’s Office on a Fixed term Contract. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to make a tangible impact in a high-profile and politically sensitive environment.

The role sits within the Mayor’s Office, Chief Executive’s Directorate, and plays a key part in supporting the Mayor’s priorities, community engagement, and external relationships.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Head of Mayor’s Office, the post holder will:

  • Support the Mayor, Deputy Mayors and Cabinet Members in the development and delivery of policy and community liaison activity
  • Lead and shape the Mayor’s community engagement and stakeholder relationships, ensuring strong connections with residents, partners, and the voluntary and business sectors
  • Oversee and manage the Mayor’s casework function, ensuring high-quality, timely responses to enquiries, petitions, and public questions
  • Work across the organisation with Corporate Directors and services to ensure alignment with the Mayor’s priorities and strategic objectives
  • Provide advice to Members and officers on policy, community liaison, and external relations, including the implications of national policy and legislation
  • Manage and lead staff within the Mayor’s Office, including casework and political support functions, and deputise for the Head of Mayor’s Office as required

This is a demanding and varied role requiring strong political awareness, sound judgement, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Can build effective relationships with Members, senior officers, and external stakeholders
  • Can demonstrate experience of policy development, community engagement, or communications
  • Have strong leadership and organisational skills, with experience of managing staff and competing priorities
  • Are confident providing advice and support in high-profile and sensitive contexts
  • Are motivated by the opportunity to step into a senior leadership role within the Mayor’s Office
