Job description

We are seeking a full-time Finance Officer to join our Corporate Finance Accountancy Section.

Role Overview: As a Finance Officer, you will help deliver a comprehensive range of accounting and financial services and provide advice to services across the Council. You will also support a range of financial management and corporate finance activities.

Principal areas of work may include budget setting, budget monitoring, year-end accounts, treasury management, VAT, financial systems and systems development, together with other related financial matters.

The role involves working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels across the Council, including senior officers.

The Council uses Agresso as its principal financial information system, and effective use of the system to support accounting processes, financial reporting and analysis will be an important part of the role.

Qualifications and Experience: You should be educated to A-level standard and hold GCSE grades 4–9 (formerly A*–C), or equivalent, in English Language and Mathematics. Ideally, you will be Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualified or working towards the qualification; however, applications from candidates who do not hold an AAT qualification will also be considered. You should also have advanced Excel skills and a sound general understanding of IT systems and Microsoft 365 applications.

Experience of working in a local government finance environment would be an advantage. You should be able to integrate quickly into the team, use your initiative and deliver high-quality results that make a positive contribution to the Accountancy service.

Key Skills and Attributes: You will have an understanding of public sector finance, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to interpret and use numerical information effectively. You must be able to produce accurate work, both independently and as part of a team, and help the service meet its deadlines while maintaining high professional standards.

You will demonstrate professionalism and discretion, remain effective under pressure and be able to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines. You will also be organised, self-motivated, willing to learn and attentive to detail.

The successful candidate will be expected to work on site for two to three days each week.
