Job description

Are you creative? Love bringing stories to life and showcasing the work that sport and physical activity does for local communities? Do you have strong digital skills and an ability to communicate well with different audiences?

If this is you, then we have an exciting opportunity to join Tendring District Council’s Sport and Leisure team as the Marketing and Communications Officer. This new role is a key part of the service’s desire to increase activity levels, further develop and bring to life the Council’s leisure centres and to place engaging storytelling at the heart of what we do.

You will be joining a team that is supporting growing numbers of residents becoming active in Tendring, thriving leisure centres with recent significant investment, and major projects being delivered over the next year that will place activity at the heart of our communities. We are becoming enablers of strong community health and physical activity. On top of that we are also delivering major grants to support community groups and through our Back2Health scheme, we are working with residents with health issues to become healthier and happier.

We are looking for an individual who is highly organised, a self-starter and is a strong communicator. We want someone who can take initiative and can initiate great projects and ideas and deliver on them. We are also looking for someone who can develop and drive a marketing plan from paper to action and deliver a robust communications plan.

The individual should have some experience in a marketing or communications field and have a skillset around digital marketing, operating social media channels and developing project plans. This role will be a diverse and energetic one so we are looking for someone who can multi-task across various projects.

This is a flavour of some of the things the successful individual will be working on:

  • Create visual communications as part of the Sport and Activity Strategy, including video content, regular promotions, posters, banners, internal TV advertisements; as well as supporting sport and leisure departments to create their own content where needed.
  • Manage end-to-end key internal communications and engagement channels, including the staff intranet.
  • Take a lead role, working alongside the Head of Sport and Leisure, in developing and maintaining the Sport and Leisure social media channels, website and app (communication element).
  • To provide efficient and effective support and administration service to the department.
  • To provide some supervision and support for apprentices within the department.
  • To maintain website, online forms and intranet pages, reviewing and updating and publishing content as necessary.
  • To lead the website management and web managers in the development and improvement of both the intranet platform and website and be the system sponsor.
  • To design marketing material for external marketing, including but not limited to billboards, bus stops, newspapers and magazines and collate statistical information and support the creation of performance/project

If you would like more information about the role please contact Andrew Wilesmith, Head of Sport and Leisure on 07980 765264.

Interviews will take place w/c 2nd November 2026.
