The Role
We are committed to our ambition that the people of our Borough will stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible. To achieve that, we work in collaboration with people to assist them to improve their health, as well as forming partnerships with professionals and we work together for the community we serve. We respect and embrace the diverse Borough that we work in and strive to reduce health inequalities by making healthy choices accessible to all. We also trust the individual contributions of each of our team members and are receptive to innovation. We firmly believe that people have untapped resources within them, that can be unleashed by providing high quality, non-judgemental support.
As a Health Improvement Worker, no two days are the same. A key focus of the role is supporting people to quit smoking, delivering one-to-one stop smoking sessions, providing behavioural support, and helping individuals make lasting changes to improve their health. Alongside this, you may also coach people to make healthy lifestyle changes and deliver health checks using point of care testing equipment, which may include finger prick blood testing. Other days, you will engage with communities at busy events, promote stop smoking services and wider health improvement initiatives, facilitate workshops on a range of health topics, and support the public health team in delivering health improvement projects.

Here are some of the skills, knowledge and abilities that we are looking for in our newest Health Improvement Worker:
- Experience of delivering stop smoking interventions with individuals and groups
- Experience in community working (either paid or voluntary), with the ability to travel to venues across the borough to fulfil service delivery (including transportation of equipment).
- The confidence to facilitate workshops (in person and virtually), and the ability to work on a one to one basis.
- You need to be reliable, approachable, have excellent presentation / communication skills and a flexible approach to working (occasional evening or weekend working may be required to meet the needs of the service).
- You must enjoy being part of a team; yet possess the personal management skills to work alone.
- The ability to use computers to maintain records and enter data on our web-based client management systems.
- You will need to be highly organised, motivated and resilient.
About Us
Hear from James Mallion, Director of Public Health.
"Public health is about far more than healthcare alone. It is about creating the conditions that enable everyone in Tameside to live healthy, fulfilling lives and reducing the inequalities that prevent too many people from reaching their full potential.
Our Public Health Team plays a vital role in bringing together partners from across the Council, NHS, education, voluntary and community sectors, and local communities themselves to tackle some of the most significant challenges facing our borough. Through our statutory public health responsibilities, alongside services including, Live Well, domestic abuse and gender-based violence support, leisure services and health improvement programmes, we can take a truly whole-system approach to improving health and wellbeing.
“We are proud of the strong relationships we have built locally, across Greater Manchester and nationally. By listening to residents, using evidence and intelligence to guide our work, and embracing innovation and collaboration, we are ensuring that resources are focused where they can make the greatest difference.
“What makes our team special is its passion, expertise and commitment to making a positive impact. We foster a supportive and inclusive culture where colleagues are trusted, encouraged to develop, and empowered to influence meaningful change. As we continue our journey towards a healthier, fairer Tameside, we are looking for people who share our ambition, are committed to tackling inequalities, and are determined to champion the voices of the communities we serve."
