The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Kinship Assessment Team for a dedicated social worker who is committed to achieving the best outcomes for children and young people.
As an Assessing Social Worker, you will play a vital role in securing permanent and stable family arrangements for Tameside children, helping to shape their futures and contributing to the wider support we provide for our cared-for children.
This is a rewarding and meaningful role where you will help ensure that children and young people are matched with foster carers who can meet their individual needs and who share Tameside’s commitment to providing warm, safe, nurturing and loving homes.
We are seeking enthusiastic social workers who are driven by strong values and a passion for strengths-based, relationship-focused practice with children and families. In return, we offer a supportive and inclusive environment where your professional growth is valued, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills, build your expertise and progress your career.
Join us and make a real difference to the lives of children and families across Tameside. Together, we can create brighter futures for the children who need us most.
About You
You will be a qualified Social Worker with experience in assessment work and a strong foundation of practice skills. Most importantly, you will be passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of children, young people and families. Motivated, committed and child-focused, you will bring energy, enthusiasm and a determination to achieve the best possible outcomes for children.
You will be professionally curious, reflective in your practice and committed to continually raising standards. We are looking for someone who embraces a strengths-based approach and is driven to help children thrive within safe, stable and loving family environments.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive, effective relationships with children, young people, carers, partner agencies and other professionals. You will be confident working collaboratively while also using your professional judgement to make informed decisions.
You will have a sound knowledge of relevant legislation, statutory requirements and the Fostering National Minimum Standards. Alongside this, you will bring strong analytical skills, attention to detail and the ability to produce high-quality written work, including assessments for court. Your ability to gather, analyse and present information clearly will be key to your success in the role.
We are looking for team players who enjoy working in a supportive and dynamic environment. This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same, offering plenty of opportunities to learn, develop and grow. In return, you will be part of a welcoming and experienced team that is committed to supporting your professional development and helping you reach your full potential.
Hear from Jill Colbert OBE, Director of Children’s Services
“When I first joined the council at the beginning of 2025 I was instantly charmed by the warmth, openness, and energy of my colleagues.
“The reason why I came to Tameside was because I knew we could do fantastic things for our families here.
“Whilst we’re currently a children’s service on a significant improvement journey, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together, and this is already making a difference for our children.
“I know from the feedback from our Commissioner, Ofsted and our Strategic Improvement Partner, that families are seeing and feeling the impact of the thoughtful and compassionate support delivered by our workforce.
“We know that if we keep children at the centre of our thinking and our actions, we will create meaningful change for them that lasts.
“We are also growing and investing in our future. We have a range of specialist services for children, giving social workers quick access to expert help that makes complex decisions easier and supports better outcomes. Our Social Work Academy is led by people who bring passion to learning. We are strengthening our progression pathways so that staying in Tameside is rewarded and recognised. We have invested in innovation and improvement so that we can grow services and support for families that we can sustain, from family hubs through to complex safeguarding.
“Together, we are creating a proud, inclusive, and safe environment where great practice can truly flourish. And I feel incredibly privileged to lead this journey alongside such dedicated colleagues.
“Be a part of something great, be a part of our improvement journey and join us at Team Tameside.”
