Your Role

At the heart of this role is ensuring we are living and delivering our One Team People Plan through a human-first approach that brings our values and leadership behaviours to life. Working in close partnership with Executive Directors and senior leadership teams, you will draw on a strong breadth of HR and OD knowledge to provide credible strategic advice, influence decisions and help create the conditions for colleagues and services to thrive.

This is an exciting opportunity to provide strategic HR and OD leadership within a chosen directorate, working closely with senior leaders to shape workforce priorities and deliver the One Team People Plan. You will bring insight, constructive challenge and practical solutions to complex people issues, using workforce data, intelligence and lived experience to influence decisions and challenge current thinking. Alongside your directorate focus, you will collaborate with Business Partners across the Council to identify cross-cutting themes, share good practice and strengthen organisational impact. You will provide strategic oversight of workforce planning, culture, change and organisational development, setting clear outcomes and helping services evidence progress.

About You

You will be an experienced HR and OD professional with a strong track record of working credibly with senior leaders and influencing at a strategic level. Commercially and financially aware, you will understand the workforce implications of service and budget decisions and translate these into realistic, sustainable workforce plans. You will be confident using data and analytics to identify trends, risks and opportunities, while combining evidence with professional judgement. AI literacy is essential: you will understand how emerging technology can support insight, productivity and better people services, and will use it responsibly. Collaborative, creative and courageous, you will offer respectful challenge, build trusted relationships and remain focused on outcomes for colleagues and residents.

About Us

You will join Business Partnering, a creative, supportive and collaborative team that works across organisational boundaries to make a practical difference. Although aligned to a chosen directorate, you will work alongside other Business Partners and HR and OD colleagues, drawing on shared expertise and contributing to Council-wide priorities. Stockport Council is a great place to work and was named Best for Inclusion at the Greater Manchester Good Employment Awards 2026. We are also committed to the Greater Manchester People Inclusion Standards, creating a workplace where colleagues feel they belong, are valued and can thrive.
