Your Role

Are you an experienced health and safety professional looking for an opportunity to make a real difference across a large and diverse organisation?

We are seeking a highly motivated Health, Safety and Wellbeing Officer to join our Corporate Health, Safety and Wellbeing Team. This is an exciting opportunity to work across council services and schools, providing professional advice, guidance and support to help create safe, healthy and legally compliant workplaces.

Reporting to the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager, you will undertake audits and inspections, support accident and incident investigations, deliver training, develop policies and guidance, and assist managers in meeting their health and safety responsibilities. You will work with a wide range of services, helping to embed a positive safety culture and drive continuous improvement.

About You

You will be a confident and collaborative level 6 qualified health and safety professional who can provide practical, proportionate advice across a wide range of council services and schools. You will bring strong technical knowledge, sound judgement and the ability to communicate clearly with managers, employees and partners. We are looking for someone organised, approachable and resilient, with the confidence to challenge where needed and support improvement in a constructive way. You will value inclusion, public service, accountability and continuous learning, and demonstrate behaviours that help build trust, encourage a positive safety culture and support safe, healthy workplaces for all.

About Us

The Corporate Health, Safety and Wellbeing Team provides professional advice, guidance and assurance across Stockport Council services including social care, leisure and schools. We work closely with managers, employees and partners to help them understand and meet their legal responsibilities, manage risk effectively and create safe, healthy and supportive workplaces.

Our work is varied, practical and influential. The team supports services with audits, inspections, incident investigations, training, policy development and health and safety improvement activity. We aim to provide advice that is clear, proportionate and solution-focused, helping services to improve standards while continuing to deliver important public services for Stockport’s communities.

You will join a supportive and collaborative team where your professional judgement will be valued and your development encouraged. As part of Stockport Council, recognised as Best for Inclusion at the Greater Manchester Good Employment Awards 2026, you will benefit from flexible and hybrid working, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, generous annual leave and ongoing professional development.

At Stockport Council we are one ambitious team on a mission to create opportunities for everyone who lives, works and spends time in the borough.
