Why Southwark?

Southwark Council is the largest local authority social landlord in London, managing 55,000 homes lived in by 40% of Southwark’s residents. We are home to over 18,300 businesses including iconic London venues such as The Shard, The Tate Modern and Borough Market along with conservation areas, historic buildings, social enterprises and a young, diverse, and growing population.

At Southwark we are committed to making our borough just and fair and are taking positive action to tackle inequalities. Our residents and communities are our greatest asset and the passion we have for Southwark is shared by millions of Londoners who enjoy our outstanding cultural offer, use our hospitals, and attend our universities. Our refreshed borough plan and focus on Southwark 2030 and Southwark Stands Together, underpins all that we do.

We particularly welcome applications from members of the Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities to increase representation at senior management level in the Council.

This is an opportunity to join Southwark Council’s Housing Needs service and make a direct contribution to preventing homelessness and reducing rough sleeping.

You will join the established Supported Lettings team, which helps residents who have slept rough or are at imminent risk of rough sleeping access good-quality private rented accommodation.

The role provides an opportunity to build relationships with landlords and letting agents while helping residents secure and sustain a settled home.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Supported Lettings Procurement Officer, you will identify and procure suitable private rented properties for people who have slept rough or are at risk of homelessness.

You will develop strong relationships with landlords, letting agents and other private sector suppliers, promote the benefits of working with the council and negotiate opportunities that meet residents’ needs. You will inspect properties to ensure they meet the required housing and safety standards and advise landlords and prospective tenants on available schemes, welfare benefits and Local Housing Allowance.

You will also work closely with residents, council teams and partner organisations to secure sustainable housing solutions and provide focused support to help residents maintain their accommodation.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone with experience of the private rented sector, including procuring and inspecting properties and negotiating effectively with landlords. You will understand the housing challenges facing people who have experienced rough sleeping and have knowledge of welfare benefits, private rented tenancies and relevant health and safety requirements.

You will be confident building productive relationships, identifying new housing opportunities and finding creative solutions for residents with a range of needs.

Strong communication, organisation and record-keeping skills are essential, together with the ability to manage priorities and deliver positive outcomes.
