Our Highways Service is looking for a passionate and dedicated Senior Traffic Management Orders Officer to join our ambitious team and help make a difference across Southwark.

The Southwark Highways team is evolving, with exciting opportunities, new ways of working and a strong track record of delivery. We maintain and improve the borough's roads and footways, design schemes that enhance safety and accessibility, and work closely with communities to improve the places where people live. Our Traffic Management Orders (TMO) function provides the essential legal framework that enables transport and highways improvements to become reality.

What You'll Be Doing

As Senior Traffic Management Orders Officer, you will lead the delivery of the council's traffic order programme, ensuring that statutory processes are completed efficiently, accurately and in compliance with legislative requirements.

You will manage the Traffic Management Orders team and budget, oversee consultations and legal notices, provide expert technical advice to colleagues and stakeholders, and support the successful delivery of highway, transport and public realm projects across the borough.

You will also play a key role in driving service improvements, supporting digital innovation, developing team capability and ensuring excellent outcomes for residents, businesses and visitors.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a candidate with a positive approach to problem-solving, a strong attention to detail and a passion for delivering excellent public services.

You will have:

  • Experience managing traffic management order processes or similar statutory highway functions.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation relating to traffic orders, highways, parking and traffic signs.
  • Experience managing teams and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong customer service skills and experience engaging with members of the public in advisory or problem-solving environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing reports, briefings and formal responses.
  • Strong IT, administrative and data management skills.
  • The ability to provide expert advice to senior managers, elected members and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively with consultants, developers and partner organisations.
  • A commitment to innovation, continuous improvement and service excellence.

Additional Information: 

  • Grade: 10
  • Contract Type: Fixed Term (3 years)
  • Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Hybrid/ Flexible Working: We offer a full range of flexible and hybrid working options.
  • Qualification Requirement: Educated to degree level or equivalent and eligible for membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Special Requirement: Regular evening and weekend working may be required.
