Southwark's highways projects are recognised across London as being of a high standard and exemplify the aspirations for transport schemes in the capital. An opportunity has arisen for an Engineer who would like to be involved in designing highways projects in our vibrant borough.

What You'll Be Doing

Working as part of the transport projects team you will be responsible for designing highways projects. Normal duties will include producing complete design packages for the implementation of a number of highway schemes, with a particular focus on walking and cycling improvements, and coordinating with the implementation team to ensure the buildability of projects through early contractor involvement.

You will be expected to be highly proficient in the use of design software, familiar with current UK standards for highway design and be responsible for feeding information into the council's CDM documentation. The successful candidate will have a good eye for detail and be able to find solutions to the challenges of designing schemes in a densely populated urban environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design development of major highways schemes,
  • Produce accurate and clear AutoCAD drawings, including layouts, sections, details, and traffic management plans.
  • Provide technical advice on highway design, constructability, and materials.
  • Manage project budgets and programme for assigned schemes (typically up to £1m or contributing to larger programmes).

What We're Looking For

Required Skills and Experience

  • You will have a recognised degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering or equivalent level of experience
  • A practical understanding of the statutory framework, regulations, and design guidance for transport and highways design
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for producing technical drawings.
  • Experience of managing a programme of capital projects in a Highway environment including feasibility, modelling, design, consultation
  • Experience delivering highway and Transport improvement schemes (junction upgrades, pedestrian crossings, cycle schemes, road safety projects, Bus improvements).
