Help Shape the Future of Sheffield’s Transport Network

Sheffield is at the heart of South Yorkshire's economy, driving investment, innovation and growth across the wider region. With a newly adopted 10 year Growth Plan and significant investment in infrastructure and regeneration, now is a pivotal time to join Sheffield City Council. One of the key priorities is creating &slshquot;A City on the Move&slshquot;, improving connectivity, supporting economic growth and delivering sustainable transport solutions for the future.

As part of this transformation, Sheffield City Council is investing in its transport infrastructure to build a safe, reliable, and low-carbon network fit for the future. Our ambitious Connecting Sheffield projects aim to provide more choice for people travelling by public transport, on foot, or by bike — creating a healthier, greener city for all.

About the Role

To help deliver this vision, we’re looking for Senior Engineers to join our Transport Projects Team.

We need experienced, creative, and committed professionals with a solid background in transport projects and traffic engineering disciplines to join an established team of multi-disciplinary engineers. You’ll play a key role in developing concept solutions for projects in often constrained and complex environments, with a strong emphasis on active travel, public transport improvements, and road safety schemes.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience in a range of transport and traffic engineering projects.
  • Ability to develop innovative and practical infrastructure solutions using software packages such as AutoCAD.
  • Sound knowledge of current design standards and an understanding of their environmental and climate impacts.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A collaborative approach, working alongside our external design and construction partner.

You’ll primarily be involved in concept design but will also provide ongoing technical assurance throughout project delivery to ensure our ambitious plans are successfully realised.

Why Sheffield?

This is a city of change — ambitious, creative, diverse, and community-driven. From its unique geography to its thriving cultural scene, Sheffield offers an environment that’s as rewarding to work in as it is to live in.

This is a chance to join a team delivering over £100m of transport investment and play a key role in Sheffield's ongoing transformation.

Unlike many private sector opportunities, Sheffield City Council offers:

  • Meaningful, city shaping work with lasting public impact
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Excellent work life balance
  • A highly competitive Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Generous annual leave
  • Professional development and career progression opportunities
  • A supportive, collaborative and ambitious team culture

If you’re passionate about transportation, sustainability, and shaping the future of one of the UK’s most exciting cities, we want to hear from you.

Further details about the responsibilities and requirements of the role are contained in the job role summary and job profile.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place during the week commencing 23 November 2026.

We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form.  Sometimes, if lots of people apply, we might not be able to interview everyone who qualifies for the Guarantee. In these cases, we’ll interview the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.

Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Read about the new job evaluation process to be introduced at Sheffield City Council.
