Specialist Teacher for Vision Impairment and Physical Disabilities
Main Pay Scale/Upper Pay Scale plus two SEN allowances (dependent on completion of the mandatory qualification)
Full-time, permanent position (27.5 hours per week), subject to Teachers’ Pay and Conditions
Required from January 2027
We are seeking to appoint a full-time, permanent Specialist Teacher from January 2027. The successful candidate will have substantial experience of supporting children and young people with physical disabilities in mainstream settings, together with experience of teaching learners with vision impairment.
Based at Tapton School, the Vision and Physical Support Service provides specialist support for children and young people aged 0–25 with low-incidence SEND across the city. The role involves managing a citywide caseload of children and young people with physical disabilities and/or vision impairment. The successful candidate will have experience of working with learners with special educational needs and disabilities. They will also be required to undertake the mandatory qualification and training needed to develop the specialist knowledge and skills required to teach children and young people with vision impairment.
We are looking for an excellent and inclusive practitioner who has experience across different age phases and works effectively with families, educational settings and multi-agency professionals. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of the barriers faced by children and young people with physical disabilities and/or vision impairment, and of the approaches needed to promote their inclusion in mainstream and specialist settings. The role includes providing specialist advice and support to educational settings, alongside direct one-to-one teaching for children and young people.
