About the role

Help Deliver a City on the Move

Sheffield is the core city at the heart of the South Yorkshire region, a major employment centre and hub for high-skilled jobs, global inward investment and knowledge-intensive businesses, with our economic reach extending across Yorkshire and over the Pennines into the North West.

It's an exciting time to join Sheffield City Council. Momentum is building across the city, with major investment programmes already underway alongside an ambitious 10 year Growth Plan that sets out Sheffield's vision for economic growth, regeneration and opportunity.

A key part of that vision is &slshquot;A City on the Move&slshquot;, focused on improving connectivity, supporting sustainable growth and delivering transport infrastructure that enables people, businesses and communities to thrive. Working alongside partners including the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Sheffield is delivering significant investment in transport and infrastructure that will shape the city's future.

As a Senior Technician, you'll play a key role in turning that vision into reality, helping to develop and deliver transport schemes that support active travel, improve public transport, enhance road safety and unlock wider regeneration across the city.

The role

Joining our Transport Programmes team will give you an opportunity to help shape the city’s future by supporting the planning and delivery of high-quality transport infrastructure, contributing to a varied portfolio of projects that enable safer, more sustainable and better-connected communities.

You will provide technical support to Senior and Principal Transport Planners delivering our ambitious transport programme across a range of priority areas including:

  • Active travel and sustainable transport schemes
  • Public transport corridor improvements
  • Road safety initiatives
  • Traffic management projects
  • Electric vehicle infrastructure
  • Regeneration and growth-related transport schemes

There will be development opportunities to lead on a number of defined, small-scale projects yourself too.

You will undertake a varied range of activities, developing the skills and experience needed to build a successful career in transport planning. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking research and analysing transport and management data
  • Working collaboratively with internal colleagues and external partners
  • Preparing clear reports, briefings and supporting documentation
  • Supporting public consultation and stakeholder engagement

About you

We are looking for someone with experience in transport planning, infrastructure or project delivery who enjoys solving problems and working collaboratively. You will be able to work effectively with colleagues, consultants, contractors and external partners to achieve successful outcomes and be able to plan and organise your own work to meet deadlines.

You will bring:

Knowledge or experience of contributing towards the delivery of successful transport or infrastructure projects
The ability to collect, analyse and present data from various sources in a clear way
Experience of helping to monitoring budgets, contributing to the preparation of business cases or supporting funding bids
The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality results
Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage confidently with stakeholders, partners and the public

Why Sheffield?

Unlike many private sector roles, Sheffield City Council offers the opportunity to combine meaningful, city shaping transport work with an excellent work life balance, a highly competitive pension, flexible and hybrid working, and a strong commitment to employee wellbeing and professional development.

You'll also benefit from:

  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, typically with 2-3 office days per week.
  • A highly competitive Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Generous annual leave and wellbeing support.
  • Access to technical training, mentoring and long term career development.
  • A supportive and experienced team delivering high profile infrastructure projects across the city.
