Purchasing and Payments Officer
Sheffield City Council
The Purchasing and Payments Team in the Housing and Neighbourhood Service has an opportunity for two full time Purchasing and Payments Officers to join them.
We are a growing dedicated, and supportive team who provide an exceptional service to housing teams to purchase goods and services on their behalf. The service is extremely busy and consistently works at an extremely fast pace.
The successful applicants must be team players, with excellent customer service and communication skills. You will need to be able to use a computer system to process requisitions, invoices, and purchase orders on our finance system. Experience using a finance system to process orders and payments is preferred, but not essential – as training will be provided for the right applicants if you are not able to currently do this. You will also need to be very competent in the use other applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams as well.
The successful candidates will be highly organised, proactive and be able to prioritise, work to deadlines and follow standard operating procedures. A can-do attitude and flexibility are essential due to the volume and variety of work. They will be required to undertake all the G4 work that the team is responsible for, which includes dealing with/payment of utility bills, processing payments and purchase orders for revenue spend items.
We need enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to ensure day to day delivery is kept to the very highest standards. You must have excellent accuracy and attention to detail skills.
The role is hybrid, with a mix of home working and in our office, which is currently at Solpro, but we will be moving in the future to another Sheffield City Council base; we do not know where at this stage.
When completing your application, please give examples for the eight points set out in the person specification, as well as how you meet the qualification/experience point. You do not need to answer all points in the person specification – only those where it says, ‘Application Form / Interview’. If you answer points not required, we will be unable to score these when shortlisting as they are not required as part of the benchmarking process.
Interviews expected to be carried out week commencing 18th May 2026 in person in Solpro.
We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.
It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.
Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone and where appropriate to the role the successful applicant will be required to undertake relevant safeguarding checks.
Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.
If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026.
