Assistant Educational Psychologists

Sheffield City Council

Soulbury SCP 1 to 5 £37,265 to £41,616

Are you looking for valuable experience in an EPS with a view to eventually training as an Educational Psychologist (EP)?

This is an exciting time to join Sheffield Educational Psychology Service, as we are expanding rapidly. We are looking to develop a substantial team of Assistant EPs to work in partnership with qualified EPs and develop new ways of working. This will include the working in a multidisciplinary team to support schools and the continued development of a collaborative and person-centred model for carrying out Education Heath and Care Needs Assessments.

We are a values-driven Service with all members of the team participating in a innovative leadership model to drive us forward. Keeping children at the heart of everything we do, we are solution-focused, person-centred, inclusive, reflective and committed to ethical practice.

We are committed to increasing diversity in the profession and to developing anti-racist practices.

Our Assistant EP team will:

  • Assist the Educational Psychology Service in the developing a collaborative model to support psychological assessments for Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNAs), working in partnership with qualified EPs. This will include drafting reports and other written feedback for and with EPs.
  • Support the delivery of core services to schools
  • Undertake a range of assessment and intervention services related to special educational needs.
  • Deliver training for schools, families and others
  • Develop a range of experience and skills in preparation for training as an Educational Psychologist.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support schools

This is a great opportunity for you to make a start on your journey towards becoming an EP if you:

  • Have strong written and oral communication skills
  • Are enthusiastic about building new and collaborative models of working with qualified EPs
  • are committed to developing strong mainstream inclusive practice and local solutions to meeting diverse needs
  • are committed to promoting positive practice and challenging structural discrimination
  • want to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people
  • can demonstrate enthusiasm and good humour.

Applications are invited from people with a good honours degree in Psychology who have experience of working with children and young people.

The posts are available as soon as possible.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups.  We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form.  Sometimes, if lots of people apply, we might not be able to interview everyone who qualifies for the Guarantee. In these cases, we’ll interview the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.

Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Find out more on our Sheff news page.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone and where appropriate to the role the successful applicant will be required to undertake relevant safeguarding checks.
