Inclusion officer (Young Carers Assessor) Temporary for 12 months (initially)

Do you want to make a difference for young people who care for others?

Across Sheffield, hundreds of young people provide care, support and emotional reassurance to family members every day. While many carry out this role with incredible resilience, caring responsibilities can impact their education, wellbeing, friendships and opportunities.

The Young Carers Assessment Team (YCAT) launched in November 2025, are looking for 4 compassionate, motivated and enthusiastic Inclusion officers (Young Carer Assessors) to join us as we grow and develop a dedicated service to ensure young carers are recognised, listened to and supported.

About the Role

As a Young Carer Assessor, you will work directly with children and young people who have caring responsibilities. You will identify their needs, strengths and aspirations, undertaking assessments that place the young person's voice at the centre of everything you do.

You will build trusted relationships with young carers and their families, helping them access the right support at the right time. Working closely with schools, health professionals, social care teams and voluntary sector partners, you will help to plan support for the cared for person, support for the young carer, support transitions, champion young carers, and help improve outcomes for some of Sheffield's most remarkable young people.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking someone who:

  • Has experience working with children, young people or families.
  • Understands the challenges faced by young carers.
  • Is skilled in assessment, engagement and person-centred planning.
  • Can build positive relationships with children, families and partner agencies.
  • Is committed to improving outcomes and reducing inequalities.
  • Has excellent communication, organisational and recording skills.
  • Can work independently while contributing positively to a supportive team.

Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 3 NVQ/QCF in child care
  • Minimum GCSE or equivalent at Grade C or above in English

Why Join Us?

  • Creative, forward-thinking team
  • Opportunities to contribute to service development
  • Access to training and ongoing professional development
  • Supportive team with a commitment to staff well-being

The Difference You'll Make

Young carers often tell us that having just one person who understands their situation can change everything.

That person could be you. Join YCAT and help ensure that young carers are recognised, supported and able to achieve their ambitions.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups.  We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form.  Sometimes, if lots of people apply, we might not be able to interview everyone who qualifies for the Guarantee. In these cases, we’ll interview the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.

Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Find out more on our Sheff news page.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone and where appropriate to the role the successful applicant will be required to undertake relevant safeguarding checks. This role requires us to complete a DBS enhanced barred childrens check.
