Information Systems Specialists (security) are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and confidentiality of Sheffield City Council’s information systems and assets. Conducting risk assessments, implementing security controls, and responding to incidents. This role is critical to ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and protecting against security threats. As a subject matter expert, this role advises and guides on all matters related to information security.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and diligent security specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate with be responsible for maintaining security systems, auditing systems against our policies and procedures, identifying vulnerabilities, managing risk, and responding to incidents.

  • Understanding of various compliance regulations and standards such as (GDPR, ISO27001, NIST, NCSC CAF, PCI-DSS, NHS DSPT)
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with technical security tools and solutions (firewalls, IDS, SIEM, SOAR, EDR, etc)
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, TLS, VPN, etc)
  • Good ethical judgment and integrity necessary to handle and protect sensitive information
  • Strong knowledge of Windows based Operating systems both desktop and server.
  • Organisational skills for managing multiple workstreams
  • Continuous learning to keep up with Security trends and threats
  • Nice to have; knowledge of programming (automation) languages. (python, bash, powershell, etc)

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the team to maintain the information security programme
  • Assist in the development of the information security policies and procedures
  • Perform risk assessments of information systems and provide best practice guidance on risk mitigation
  • Manage security tools such as antivirus, EDR, SIEM, SOAR, Vulnerability scanner, etc
  • Implement security measures to protect the organisation
  • Conduct security audits to ensure compliance with policy
  • Work with departments to educate and train staff on best practices and awareness and build a strong culture of security within the organisation
  • Investigate and respond to security incidents and breaches
  • Co-ordinate with service owners to ensure 3rd party systems comply with security requirements
  • Work with the information security team to ensure that risks a properly managed
  • Keep up to date on the latest cyber trends and threats

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
