Handy Person for the Staying Close Project

What is the project?

Staying Close is a government funded project within Sheffield City Council that provides wrap around support for looked after young people/young people who are leaving care. The young people are transitioning from a residential home to their own home for the first time.

The project is currently externally funded until end of July 2027 and is subject to approval for further funding.

We want our young people to be successful in engaging in education/training, belonging in the community in which they live, having hobbies, interests and friends and being happy in their own home. We know that in many circumstances, when a young person moves into their own home for the first time, they have support from their family with practical things around their house. This is not something that our young people often have, which is why we are looking for a handy person to work into the project and provide that support.

What would we want the handy person to do?

  • Provide support around getting their house ready (putting up and assembling fixtures and fittings and decorating)
  • Helping with any problems that may arise in the home (leaks, breaks, when things seem to stop working)
  • Helping the young people to learn to do some of these things for themselves
  • Supporting the team and our young people generally around independence planning and work (support with our allotment – drive to produce and use our own food

What sort of person are we looking for?

  • Someone who is happy and confident to work with young people
  • Someone who is flexible and can prioritise their time based on need
  • Someone who is patient and happy to show young people how to do things for themselves
  • Someone who can work independently and as part of a team
