Casual Passenger Assistant

Salford City Council

Salford£49Closes: 16/05/2026

About us

The Passenger Transport Unit is responsible for the delivery of the school transport service, providing transport for students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to their school or college provision over the academic year.

We currently have an exciting vacancy within our team to enable us to continue to build on our success and also bring new experience, knowledge and ideas into the team.

About you

Are you approachable, friendly, and always there with a smile?

We are looking to appoint enthusiastic and flexible individuals as casual passenger assistants within our team. You will be calm under pressure with good communication and care skills.

You will need to be a team player working closely with our passengers, ensuring their care, comfort and safety on the vehicle. The role involves travelling on a vehicle, on a split shift, to safely transport passengers to their school/college provision.

Casual staff are sometimes required at short notice, often early in the morning and (for operational reasons) are required to either live within the Salford boundary, or be able to reach a collection/drop off point within the boundary. It is necessary for applicants to live in or near Salford. The nature of the role allows flexibility to fit around your other commitments. This is a challenging role but one that is highly rewarding and fun.

Casual staff can progress to permanent posts as these become vacant, as permanent posts are filled by casual staff who wish to be considered.

About the role

You will be responsible for escorting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) from their homes to school or college.

You will be required to be available for work before and after school, on a casual basis, term time only.

Please be aware that this post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and that you will be required to meet the cost of the DBS check currently £49.50. The payment for this will be deducted from your first four months’ salary payments at a rate of £12.38 per month. If you do not commence employment for any reason but the DBS has been processed, you will be sent an invoice for the payment of £49.50.

If you have lived or worked abroad for 3 months or more in the last 5 years or 12 months or more (whether continuously or in total) in the last 10 years whilst aged 18 or over, please refer to the link below for details for how to obtain your Certificates of Good Character.
