About The Role

This an exciting opportunity to join Runnymede Borough Council as we continue to develop our Building Control team.

We are looking for a committed and professionally competent Registered Building Inspector to join our Building Control team. You will help protect the health, safety, sustainability, energy conservation and accessibility of people in and around buildings across the borough, undertaking all aspects of the Building Control function on behalf of the council.

In this role, you will examine plans, carry out site inspections, maintain accurate records, attend dangerous structure call outs during working hours and ensure compliance with the Building Regulations on site. You will work closely with residents, contractors, architects and partner agencies, offering a professional, solution‑focused service while upholding the Building Safety Regulator’s Operational Standards Rules and Code of Conduct. 

This is a flexible role combining office, home and site‑based working within a supportive team. You will contribute to service development, build strong customer relationships and aid delivery of Runnymede's Building Control service.

About You

We are seeking a confident, self-motivated and diplomatic person with a ‘can-do’ attitude and the ability to deliver positive outcomes for the future of the Borough. You should be able to provide clear and accurate advice to stakeholders and show excellent customer care, verbal and written skills. A highly skilled and customer-focused Building Control professional who is passionate about ensuring safe, compliant, and high-quality development. You will bring strong technical expertise, excellent judgement, and the confidence to work collaboratively with colleagues, residents, developers, and contractors.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Significant experience working within Building Control and a thorough understanding of Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Registration with the Building Safety Regulator at an appropriate level, or the ability to demonstrate eligibility.
  • Strong technical knowledge and the ability to interpret and apply complex regulations in a practical and proportionate way.
  • Experience of plan checking, site inspections, enforcement activities, and providing specialist technical advice.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage confidently with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A proactive and solution-focused approach to problem solving and decision making.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload while meeting deadlines and performance targets.
  • A commitment to delivering outstanding customer service and achieving positive outcomes for residents and developers.
  • The ability to work independently, exercise professional judgement, and take responsibility for complex cases.
  • Experience of supporting, mentoring, or sharing knowledge with colleagues to promote continuous improvement.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and keeping up to date with changes in legislation and industry best practice.
  • A full UK driving licence and the ability to travel as required to carry out site inspections and attend meetings.
