About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Runnymede Borough Council, the Housing Maintenance Inspector will ensure that customers are at the forefront of our business. As a Housing Maintenance Inspector you will:
 
  • Work with contractors and colleagues, to deliver a repairs service in collaboration with contractors to deliver a first class repairs and maintenance service to council-owned properties
  • Manage maintenance works across the Council’s housing stock, ensuring repairs are correctly specified, authorised, completed to standard, and provide value for money.
  • Carry out inspections, producing condition reports, specifying works, monitoring quality, and signing off works and contractor payments accurately.
  • Oversee contractor performance, health and safety compliance (including CDM), quality inspections, invoice checking, and performance monitoring against agreed standards and KPIs.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, including fire risk assessments, area inspections, contractor audits, and safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Assist planned maintenance programmes and budgeting by identifying required works, tracking progress, updating systems, and reporting to the Technical Services Manager.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, tenants, and tenant representatives, providing technical advice, aiding lettings timescales, and consulting on works affecting residents.
  • Participate in emergency response and out‑of‑hours on‑call rotas, undertake occasional evening or weekend work, and maintain continuous professional development to meet service needs.

Salary

Please note that Runnymede Borough Council is currently undertaking a pay and grading review, which is expected to be implemented during the summer. The successful applicant will be appointed under the Council’s current grading and salary structure and, following implementation of the new framework, will be assimilated into the revised pay structure in line with all existing employees.

The grading in the new pay structure for this role will be £38,434 to £42,012.

About You

We are looking for a Housing Maintenance Inspector to work within the Housing Department to deliver a first class responsive repair service, the successful candidate will have a range of skills including:

  • General experience within the building trade, with good working knowledge of construction practices, building defects, and the ability to identify appropriate remedial solutions.
  • Literate and numerate to GCSE / O‑Level standard (or equivalent), with the ability to prepare clear, accurate specifications and documentation.
  • Proven experience supervising contractors, working with schedules of rates, and delivering works to a high standard of quality and service.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to listen to and empathise with tenants’ concerns, handle complaints effectively, and maintain a customer‑focused approach.
  • Positive and proactive approach to change, with strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to plan, prioritise, and work independently using own initiative.
  • Competent user of standard IT packages and databases to support task management, record‑keeping, and service delivery.
  • Able to meet the physical and practical requirements of the role, including safe access to building sites, working at height, participation in out‑of‑hours standby, and holding a driving licence with access to a vehicle.
