About the role

Rochdale Borough Council is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Electoral Services Officer to join our Governance and Elections team.

This is a key operational role supporting the delivery of local, regional and national elections, referendums and electoral registration functions across the borough. You will work as part of a professional team ensuring that all electoral processes are administered lawfully, accurately and to a high standard, maintaining public confidence in the democratic process.

The role is ideal for someone with local government or electoral experience who is looking to develop their career in elections administration, or for a strong administrator with excellent organisational skills and an interest in democratic services.


What you’ll be doing

As an Elections Officer, you will:

  • Support the planning, organisation and delivery of elections, referendums and electoral registration activity in accordance with electoral law and Electoral Commission guidance
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Register of Electors, including processing applications, absent voting arrangements and responding to enquiries from residents
  • Help prepare and administer statutory notices, nomination processes, polling station arrangements and count preparations
  • Recruit, train and support temporary election staff, such as polling station staff and count staff
  • Deal professionally with enquiries from councillors, candidates, agents, political parties and members of the public
  • Contribute to project planning, timetables and postelection reviews
  • Support the Returning Officer and senior officers in ensuring compliance, accuracy and transparency in all electoral processes
  • Work flexibly, including evenings and weekends, during peak election periods

What we’re looking for

You will have:

  • Experience of working in a busy administrative or local government environment
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and work to statutory deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence in working with a wide range of stakeholders and handling sensitive or confidential information
  • Good IT skills, including experience of using databases and Microsoft Office
