About Us 

Newham is a vibrant, ambitious and rapidly growing east London borough. We are one of England’s youngest and most diverse boroughs with 72% of our residents from ethnically diverse communities, speaking over 220 languages. 

Newham Council is working to ensure there is greater investment in public spaces and more opportunities for young people. This includes leading a landmark project to transform the historic Canning Town Old Library into Newham Heritage Centre, the borough’s newest cultural hub. 

When construction work is completed, the building will contain an inspiring new exhibition space, reading room and bespoke archive storage, digital suite, learning space, venue hire space and a cafe. This ambitious project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, will establish a new cultural destination for the borough and connect people who are living, working and studying in Newham.

About the Job

We are seeking a Learning & Engagement Apprentice to join Newham Heritage Centre’s team. We are looking for someone who is passionate about heritage, culture and community engagement.  The role will involve working closely with people, responding to visitor needs and supporting the delivery of our ambitious creative activity programme. The Learning & Engagement Apprentice will have the unique opportunity get ‘hands-on’ practical experience, working on a range of community and visitor focused activities at Newham Heritage Centre’s. They will work behind the scenes as we prepare for Newham Heritage Centre’s opening as well as have a front facing role in visitor and participant activities after opening.

Details of the Job

As an apprentice at Newham, you will receive: 

• 18 month fixed-term contract with Newham Council.

• Quality training, to include one day a week learning with an accredited education provider based in central London.

• Line management and colleague support.

• Access to a mentor and development opportunities.

• Being part of an apprenticeship network.

• Additional training opportunities.

• Support to enhance your CV and interview skills. 

• Up to 24 days’ annual leave plus three additional days that are taken between 26 December and 3 January.

• 8 public holidays per year.

• 36 hour working week.

About You

You will be able to demonstrate the following: 

• Qualifications to a GCSE level or above, with a proficiency in English and Maths.
• Strong ‘people skills’ with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of people.
• Reliability and punctuality.
• Ability to work well as part of a team
• Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise tasks.
• Organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Good ICT skills.
• Inclusive approach to work which is culturally appropriate and responsive to the needs of all users. 
• A passion for arts, heritage and culture.
• An interest in heritage and local history.
• Good knowledge and understanding of Newham and east London.
• A commitment to undertake and complete a qualification via a structured apprenticeship training programme.
• Flexibility in working hours, which at times may include weekends and evenings.
• Willingness and ability to travel throughout Newham as required.
• A commitment to safeguarding vulnerable adults and children and young people.
• Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check following a conditional offer.

Cultural learning and participation officer / Skills England

To successfully complete the Apprenticeship, not only must you meet the performance standards required, but you will also need meet the off-the job learning requirements. 

Your responsibilities will include: 

• Attending all classes

• Learning and developing practical skills, 

• Participating in classes, workshops and training opportunities

• Observing employee processes and procedures

• Completing tests and assignments

• Delivering presentations to colleagues and other stakeholders. 

You should be well-organised, flexible, and willing to assist wherever possible.
