Shape how a great city spends its money

Newcastle is a city that never stands still. Bold, ambitious and proud of its communities, we are committed to maximising the social, environmental and economic value of everything we buy.

Our vision is clear: to raise the quality of works, services and goods commissioned across the city, ensuring every pound spent delivers meaningful outcomes for residents, businesses and visitors.

We’re now looking for an experienced Commissioning & Procurement Officer to play a key role in delivering that ambition.

About the role
In this influential role, you will lead and shape procurement activity across some of the Council’s largest and most complex spend categories, including:
  • Construction (Capital Design & Build, Repairs & Maintenance)
  • Waste and Environmental Services
  • Building Materials
  • Traffic Management

Working closely with senior internal stakeholders, delivery teams and external partners, you’ll help develop commissioning strategies, lead complex procurements and ensure we deliver best value while meeting our wider social value, sustainability and governance objectives.

This is a role with real visibility and impact, where your professional judgement and expertise will directly influence how Newcastle delivers vital services and infrastructure.

About you
You’ll be a confident, credible procurement professional who enjoys operating at both strategic and operational levels.

We’re looking for someone who brings:
  • Strong practical experience in one or more of the relevant category areas
  • A good working knowledge of public procurement legislation and regulations
  • Proven experience leading complex, high-value procurement projects
  • The ability to influence, challenge constructively and build strong stakeholder relationships
  • A proactive mindset and a genuine desire to improve services and outcomes
  • Ideally, you will be CIPS qualified (or currently studying / willing to study), with the drive and ambition to continue developing your professional career within a large, values-driven organisation.

What we can offer you
In return, you’ll be joining a forward-thinking, award-winning procurement service within a council that genuinely values its people.

Our benefits include:
  • A competitive salary and pension scheme
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Strong support for continuous professional development
  • Employee wellbeing support and assistance programmes
  • Access to a range of salary sacrifice and employee discount schemes
Most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to do work that matters—supporting a city-wide agenda and making a tangible difference to people’s lives.

Ready to join us?

If you’re excited by the opportunity to help shape and deliver high-quality procurement that supports Newcastle’s future, we’d love to hear from you.
