What will I be doing?
You will be integral in making a positive impact on the city by:
  • Constructing Driveways, Footway reconstruction, Repairs to Steps, footpaths, roads and walls; interpreting design detailed drawings in relations to these construction works.
  • Use and maintain necessary tools and equipment in accordance with applicable codes of practice.
  • Comply with relevant health and safety legislation.
  • Develop skills in setting out, reading and understanding site plans.
  • Attend all training relevant to the role.
  • Promote and implement the council’s equal opportunities policies in all aspects of employment and service delivery.
 
As an apprentice you will be learning on the job to maintain and assist in constructing Newcastle’s highways network.
 
What will I need?

 We are looking for a real team player and someone who has a real passion to ensure the safety of residents and visitors to the city.
You will be required to work in a physical and demanding environment in all weathers. You will be required to attend training essential to your role.
 
What will I receive in return?
We’ll support you to learn new skills, and to thrive in your role, undertaking a NVQ Apprenticeship Qualification. The role is full time (37 hours per week) for a fixed term of 24 months – this should include time to complete the end point assessment. At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a percentage of the salary for the role the apprentice is working towards. This is always at least National Minimum Wage and increases each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.
 
This apprenticeship role is working towards the full role of Roadworker Grade N5, with a starting salary of £29,064. The apprenticeship rate will be paid as a percentage of the starting salary, or National Minimum Wage (whichever is greater)
Year of apprenticeship percentage of the entry level grade
Year 1 60%.
Year 2 65%.
Fully qualified 100%
 
Whilst we are unable to guarantee a post in the role apprentices work towards, all our apprentices are supported to apply for suitable vacancies when they complete their apprenticeship so that they can make use of their new skills and qualifications.  
 
Please note: You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in the same or similar subject. If you have extensive knowledge or experience in this occupational area, you may not be eligible to undertake the apprenticeship.
