Location: York Road Depot, 225a York Road, LS9 7QQ – will deliver training from different locations where required.
An opportunity has arisen for a Trainer to join our Catering Leeds and Fleet Services team based at Leeds City Council’s York Road Depot (Leeds 9).
Fleet Services are responsible for the management and maintenance of the corporate vehicle fleet and a range of training requirements for drivers of the corporate vehicle fleet. Catering Leeds are responsible for catering within schools, children centres and adult care settings. Based at Torre Road Depot (Leeds 9), this role will join our small but busy team to support the whole authority.
As a Trainer, you’ll thrive on delivering a wide range of training to colleagues and external customers to ensure that Leeds City Council and their partners have the highest level of skills to be safe on the roads, whilst delivering a wide range of services and provisions. Being professional, friendly, organised and being able to think outside the box are essential in this role.
It’s not about just standing in a classroom and reading from a pre-scripted presentation; it’s about adding your flair and knowledge to engage everyone who walks through the door for a course. It’s not about being a driving instructor, it’s about guiding, sharing knowledge and tips to new drivers out on the roads as they train to be able to undertake their roles safely whilst driving a Leeds City Council vehicle. You will leave a first impression on all new drivers within Leeds City Council - make it the best it can be.

About the role
The role of a trainer assists in the delivery of an effective and efficient range of training and development support to the operational and business development areas of Fleet Services and Catering Leeds. Acting as a key ambassador within the service you will take a lead to ensure a joint approach across business areas for health, safety and training for catering and fleet services. You will ensure a harmonious relationship with support services and other areas of both services, designed to create strong but agile teams.

As our next Trainer you’ll play an integral part in the continuous upkeep of driver training across Leeds City Council, ensuring legal compliance and ensuring we are meeting all the requirements of our Operator’s License. Involvement with training of external partners is also required.
You will be part of a team that ensures all our Catering staff in schools and centres across the whole of Leeds are fully up to date with elements of training and development. A key element is our mandatory health and safety training across both Catering and Fleet which you will be actively involved in delivering.
The role is integral to ensuring that the highest standard of driver training is delivered across Leeds City Council. Being organised, well-informed, enthusiastic and approachable will ensure you are able to deliver to this high standard. Ability to think outside the box to solve on the spot problems is a key skill that will ensure the service is delivered on time to deadlines.

Job Description
Job Purpose:
The postholder will assist in the delivery of an effective and efficient range of training and development support to the operational and business development areas of Fleet Services and Catering Leeds in conjunction with the Operational Support Manager. Acting as a key ambassador within the service the postholder will take a lead to ensure a joint approach across business areas for health, safety and training for catering and fleet services. Will ensure a harmonious relationship with support services and other areas of both services, designed to create strong but agile teams.
Responsibilities:
- To determine a skills matrix for: Catering Leeds, Fleet Services, and LCC drivers which determines the requirements for individuals/service areas, tracks progress and reports on progress using a range of KPI’s.
- To develop and deliver training programmes as identified by the Operational Support Manager in line with the skills matrix. This should include the ability to develop presentations with supporting documentation for training i.e. overview, lesson plans and delivery method.
- To work with and provide quality feedback on a range of training providers, ensuring high standards and business needs are met using a cost effective, best value approach which delivers the training needs for both service areas and the wider needs of the local authority.
- To assist in the management, development and use of training systems and procedures, with a view to being less reliant on paper-based processes, ensuring all training is effectively captured on electronic systems.
- To use data systems to support the production of reports for senior management team.
- To run and look after designated training environments/classroom, ensuring facilities management requirements are in place and these are effectively set up, arranged and tidied away after training use.
- To plan, manage and report on the training budget throughout the financial year, delivering service needs at best value prices against the skills matrix.
- To understand and have knowledge and experience of delivering a range of training to a large organisation with a varied workforce and needs, to assist managers to ensure that they provide group and individual training and development which enables them to enhance employee performance.
- To review training methods and plan improved delivery of training.
- To plan, develop and deliver a training programme which will support users throughout the council; meeting our corporate requirements and a programme which can be promoted within our commercial strategies to external partners as part of income generation plans.
- To deliver a wide range of training and development targeting differing workforce groups using a variety of learning styles/approaches to ensure a high standard of comprehension is achieved and improved employee performance.
- To work with Operational Support Manager to develop a fit for purpose training programme that provides role associated training, but also a coaching, mentoring and development programme to enhance employee performance.
- To liaise with local colleges/training providers regarding the development of managers and staff through identifying and sourcing relevant courses and professional continuous development, making effective use of the apprentice levy.
- To co-ordinate the service measures regarding apprentices, trainees, and work experience placements.
- To develop and manage the performance appraisal process to ensure completion on time for all staff within Catering Leeds and Fleet Services.
- To be responsible for ensuring all legislation and council policies and procedures linked to training and compliance are fully implemented and achieved in line with business requirements.
- To work as part of a team and to share best practice with colleagues.
- To ensure duties are carried out duties in accordance with Council Values and Managers Habits.
- To be a Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety auditor and undertake audits as requested and in line with the services schedule to support continuous compliance and service development.
- To participate in appraisal, training and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.
- To improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and appropriate CPD programmes.
- To work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
- Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.
