Leeds Building Services (LBS) is the in-house service provider for construction, repairs and maintenance works across the Council. The service currently delivers Responsive Repairs, Maintenance and Planned Works to Council Houses across various parts of the City and Council Assets across 800 sites including Schools, the Civic Estate, Offices, Sports and Leisure Centers and Children’s Homes across the Authority.

About you
As a Trade Apprentice, you will bring to the role:
- Good literacy and numeracy skills.
- Time management and organisational skills.
- An ability to understand and follow instructions.
- English and, Maths at grade 4 (equivalent to GCSE grade C) or higher, or willing to undertake the English and Maths functional skills alongside your apprenticeship.

As our next Trade Apprentice, you’ll complete an apprenticeship where you will attend college, learn on the job, receive support throughout and on successful completion of this apprenticeship, potentially secure a position with Leeds Building Services. Examples of the type of work involved:
- To understand the importance of personal protective equipment, safety equipment and to comply with any instructions given.
- You will be required to attend college and train to level 3 or to an appropriate level for the apprenticeship you are completing, in order to gain your apprenticeship qualification. Completing and complying with all tasks and assignments set by the college and by the target date.
- To work conscientiously to achieve a good level of pass.
- Must undertake and gain a full driving licence before the end of the apprenticeship and pass the Leeds City Council’s ‘Passport to Drive’ course.

- Joiner x 3
- Plumbers x 3
- Plasterer x 1
- Electrician x 5

Timeline for interviewing (at Leeds Building Services – LS14 1NZ) and onboarding for the successful candidates:
- shortlisting will take place until 12th June and successful candidates will be invited to book their interview slots between 15th and 19th June
- Interactive interview sessions will be held on the 29th and 30th June and 1st July – this is a group activity involving all trades, those at the earlier sessions will be allocated the first informal slots.
- Informal interviews will be held from 1st July – 7th July (slots will be uploaded to your account on the day of the interactive interview and will be split by trade)
- Outcomes will be sent out from 27th July – 31st July
- College enrolment will be sent out to those successful and will be arrange via college and the candidate.
- Successful candidates will start at LBS on Tuesday 2nd September 2026 at 9am

Job Description

Responsibilities
- Learn the skills and techniques within your chosen area through on site working, office-based activity and attendance at college.
- Work on housing and non-housing jobs, gaining an understanding of the skills that are an appropriate level for an apprentice.
- Learn the processes of planning and managing workloads, processes, and materials management.
- Learn and understand the IT systems appropriate to the role of an apprentice.
- To learn and understand the basic requirements of health and safety associated with construction work and adopt safe working practices.
- To understand the importance of personal protective equipment, safety equipment and to comply with any instructions given.
- You will be required to attend college and train to level 3 or to an appropriate level for the apprenticeship you are completing, in order to gain your apprenticeship qualification. Completing and complying with all tasks and assignments set by the college and by the target date.
- To work conscientiously to achieve a good level of pass.
- Must undertake and gain a full driving licence before the end of the apprenticeship and pass the Leeds City Council’s ‘Passport to Drive’ course.
Essential requirements: It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.
Specific Skills and Competencies required:
- English and, Maths at grade 4 (equivalent to GCSE grade C) or higher, or willing to undertake the English and Maths functional skills alongside your apprenticeship.
- Good literacy and numeracy skills.
- Time management and organisational skills.
- An understanding of customer confidentiality.
- Courteous manner towards clients, customers, and colleagues.
- Self-motivated and ability to use initiative when necessary.
- An ability to communicate with the public, tenants, and colleagues.
- If applying for a trade apprenticeship - an ability to use a variety of tools e.g., electrical/hand tools generators after training.
- A commitment to continuous learning and development.
- Willing to abide by LCC equal opportunities policy.

- An ability to work as part of a team.
- An ability to analyse information.
- An ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Undertake and pass other relevant professional courses and exams relating to your chosen apprenticeship such as F-gas.
