About you
As a Fitness Coordinator, you will bring to the role:
- Experience working within the health and fitness industry, including planning and delivering programmes
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire both customers and colleagues
- Experience of mentoring or supporting staff development
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- A commitment to delivering high standards of customer service and continuous improvement
About the role
Active Leeds is the city’s largest fitness operator, with 17 facilities, 22 pools and 13 gyms, delivering over 400 fitness classes each week to more than 30,000 members.
As our next Fitness Co-ordinator, you’ll play a vital role in supporting and developing our fitness offer across the city. Working alongside the Fitness and Wellbeing Manager and site teams, you’ll help drive improvements in health and fitness delivery, ensuring consistency and quality across all centres.
You’ll contribute to the development of fitness programmes and projects, support membership retention through excellent customer journeys, and help ensure our services remain aligned to industry trends and customer needs. You’ll also support, mentor and develop fitness staff, helping to build a skilled and motivated workforce.
This is a highly visible role where you’ll lead by example—supporting sessions, stepping in where needed, undertaking audits, and working collaboratively with partners and teams across Active Leeds to continuously raise standards.
The role is integral to our Active Leeds service, helping to deliver against our ambition to make Leeds the best city to be active in.

Job Description
Job purpose
- To assist in the co-ordination and development of fitness activities within Leisure Centres.
- To raise the standards of fitness delivery.
Responsibilities
- To support the Fitness Manager and Leisure Centre Managers in ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of the centre fitness programmes.
- To assist (through the use of a retention model), the organisation and delivery of gym and fitness sessions and special events.
- To assist in the development and management of specific fitness projects as appropriate.
- To communicate effectively with organisations to encourage involvement and interest in fitness.
- To assist in supporting customer fitness progression.
- To assist partnership working with internal and external organisations.
- To contribute to fitness decisions by being part of the Fitness Development Working Group.
- To assist, lead, teach or supervise sessions where cover is required.
- To assist through recruitment with establishing a comprehensive team of fitness professionals through training and recruitment.
- To have an awareness of the needs, aspirations and abilities of all participants.
- To assist in the personal and professional development of individuals employed through establishing a comprehensive programme of CPD and deliver where necessary.
- To assist and undertake fitness based administrative tasks as required.
- To undertake audits of gym and fitness delivery providing feedback to Leisure Centre Managers and Fitness Manager.
- To support the facility management team with the supervision of gym and fitness staff.
- To assist with providing feedback to customers.
- To undertake any other duties which may be assigned from time to time and that are commensurate with the grade of the post.
- To effectively manage appropriate budgets in accordance with Leeds City Council’s Financial Regulations.
- To undertake the accountabilities of the post in accordance with council policies including the Safeguarding of Young People and Vulnerable Adults, Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety policies.

Qualifications
- Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification(CIMSPA-recognised) or equivalent.
- Level 2 Certificate in Group Training / Exercise to Music

- Experience of the Health and Fitness Industry

- Experience of mentoring staff
- To gain the Emergency First Aid within 6 months
- Knowledge of Risk Assessments and Health and Safety guidelines
- Relevant knowledge of Child Protection and welfare issues
- An understanding / knowledge of the principles of developing fitness activities
