Role Responsibility

About us:
Kent County Council’s Family Hubs are part of our integrated Early Help offer for children, young people and families, supporting those aged 0–19 (up to 25 for children and young people with SEND).
Family Hubs bring together services such as midwifery, health visiting, parenting support, early years provision and targeted support in local communities. Working alongside a wide range of partners, Family Hubs provide accessible, welcoming places where families can get the right help at the right time.
Kent has 56 Family Hubs countywide, each playing a vital role in supporting local communities and improving outcomes for children and families.
About the role:
We are recruiting a part‑time Business Support Assistant to support the delivery of services across our Canterbury District Family Hubs, covering five locations in Herne Bay, Whitstable, Canterbury and Wincheap. The role is contracted to a Monday and Tuesday working pattern.
This is a front‑facing, customer‑focused role, supporting the day‑to‑day operation of busy Family Hubs. You will play a key part in welcoming families, visitors and partner agencies, providing clear information, and ensuring hubs run smoothly and safely.
Your contractual base will be Briary Family Hub. However, this post will currently provide reception and administrative cover across other Family Hubs within the Canterbury District, and you will need to be flexible to attend different sites during your working day where required.
Key responsibilities include:
Acting as the first point of contact for families, visitors, partners and professionals
Greeting, welcoming and signposting families to appropriate support and services
Supporting reception cover, including opening and closing hub buildings as required
Providing administrative support to Family Hub staff and managers
Managing telephone calls, emails, records and data accurately and confidentially
Supporting Health & Safety processes and reporting building or facilities issues
Liaising with colleagues and partners in a multi‑agency environment
Being flexible to move between Family Hub locations to meet service need
About you:
We are looking for someone who is organised, approachable and calm, with a genuine interest in supporting families and communities.
You will be able to demonstrate:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a confident and welcoming manner
Experience of working in a customer‑facing or administrative role
Good ICT skills, including Microsoft Office and digital systems
The ability to manage a varied workload and respond to competing priorities
A flexible approach to working across multiple sites
This role requires regular travel between Family Hub locations within the Canterbury District. The district cannot always be easily navigated using public transport, and you may be required to support one location and move to another during the working day. Access to suitable transport is therefore essential. Kent County Council remains committed to making reasonable adjustments where required.
What we offer:
In return, we can offer you:
29 days annual leave (pro rata) plus bank holidays
Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme
Access to training and ongoing development opportunities
A supportive, people‑focused working environment
Access to Kent Rewards, offering discounts with local and national retailers
A rewarding role making a real difference to families in your community
About your application:
Please use the “Reason for Application” section to demonstrate how you meet the criteria outlined in the Job description and Person Specification.
