Senior Housing Officer
London Borough of Islington
About The Role
Multiple vacancies available
Shape thriving communities. Solve complex challenges. Build your housing career at Islington.
At Islington Council, we're committed to delivering some of the best housing services in the country while creating a more equal borough for everyone who lives here.
We're looking for talented and motivated housing professionals to join our Housing Operations team as Senior Housing Officers. Whether you're already working at this level or looking to take the next step in your housing management career, this is an opportunity to develop your expertise, broaden your experience and make a genuine difference to residents' lives every day.
As one of London's largest social landlords, we offer the scale, variety and complexity that housing professionals seek when looking to grow their careers. No two days are the same, and you'll be responsible for making decisions that have a real and lasting impact on the communities you serve.
About the role
As a Senior Housing Officer, you'll play a key role in delivering a first-class housing management service, building strong relationships with residents and helping to create safe, sustainable and thriving neighbourhoods.
This is a highly visible, community-based role where you'll spend much of your time out on estates, visiting residents, carrying out inspections and working with partner agencies to resolve issues and improve outcomes. The role offers a unique combination of customer service, investigation, case management and neighbourhood working, providing excellent exposure to a wide range of housing disciplines.
You'll also benefit from the support of specialist in-house teams and gain valuable experience that can support future progression and specialist housing roles.
What you'll be doing
Building strong communities:
You'll take ownership of a designated housing patch, developing positive relationships with residents and ensuring that tenancies are sustained wherever possible. Through regular estate inspections, home visits, resident meetings and local engagement activities, you'll be a visible presence within the community and help ensure residents feel listened to and supported.
Managing complex and rewarding casework:
This is a role that offers genuine variety and challenge. You could be supporting a vulnerable resident to access services, investigating reports of anti-social behaviour, responding to safeguarding concerns, addressing tenancy breaches or working with partner agencies to resolve complex neighbourhood issues.
Developing specialist housing knowledge:
You'll gain valuable experience across a wide range of housing management functions, including:
- Tenancy management and tenancy sustainment
- Anti-social behaviour, safeguarding and domestic abuse casework
- Housing law, enforcement and court-related proceedings
- Fire and building safety compliance
- Resident engagement and neighbourhood management
- Complaints and complex case resolution
- Multi-agency partnership working and community support
Making a meaningful difference:
At the centre of everything you do will be a commitment to delivering excellent outcomes for residents. You'll listen, investigate, support, challenge and advocate, helping people sustain their homes and improve their quality of life while protecting the wellbeing of wider communities.
What we're looking for
You'll be a strong communicator with a customer-focused approach, the confidence to manage complex cases and difficult conversations, and the ability to balance competing priorities. You'll be resilient, solution-focused and committed to delivering excellent services for diverse communities.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being out and about, building relationships and working directly with residents and communities, so you'll thrive in a role that is active, varied and community-focused rather than desk-based.
Experience in housing, tenancy management or a high-demand customer service environment is desirable, as is knowledge of areas such as anti-social behaviour, safeguarding and tenancy management. A CIH qualification, or willingness to work towards one, would be welcomed.
We welcome applications from people with experience gained in housing, customer service, community-based services, the public sector, the emergency services, the armed forces, or other roles involving problem-solving, relationship building and supporting diverse communities.

Working for the team, service and our organisation
Islington is a place rich with diversity and culture. As a council our sense of purpose couldn’t be clearer: we serve. It’s in the logo. We are committed to challenging inequality in the borough and as one of the largest employers we know that to look after the place and the planet, we have to look after our people. Together we can change the future.
We are determined to create a more equal Islington, where everyone who lives here has an equal chance to thrive.
To do this, everyone who works at Islington Council lives by a set of values which guide us in everything that we do: collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering. They spell out ‘CARE’, which is what we think public service is all about.

We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to any unlawful discrimination, harassment, or victimisation on the grounds of any protected characteristics under the 2010 Equality Act, including but not limited to race, disability, sexual orientation, sex, religion and belief, age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy, and maternity. Any incidents of discrimination will be promptly investigated and addressed in line with our HR policies to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all colleagues.
We use data to identify and address disparities, ensuring that our policies and practices are transparent and impactful in promoting a diverse representation of backgrounds and perspectives at all levels of the organisation. We look at inequality through an intersectional lens, recognising that different aspects of someone’s identity can combine to create unique experiences of discrimination and disadvantage.
We know that advancing diversity and inclusion is a continuous journey, and we must listen to our colleagues and learn where we can further improve. We work closely with our Colleague Forums and Trade Unions, supported by active allies from our Corporate Management Team, to monitor and evaluate our practices, identify barriers, and empower colleagues to promote equality and inclusion in the workplace.
Every one of us has a role to play in making Islington Council a truly inclusive workplace. By living out our CARE (collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering) values every day and embedding the principles of equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our work, we can all actively contribute to empowering people and creating a more equal Islington.
