Revenues Inspector
London Borough of Hillingdon
About the role
Do you enjoy being out and about, asking the right questions, spotting what others miss, and turning real‑world evidence into sound decisions? This is a varied, customer‑facing role where your visits, enquiries and judgement directly protect public funds, maximise income and ensure residents and businesses are billed accurately and fairly.
You’ll be at the heart of inspections and investigations for Council Tax and Business Rates, helping to keep the Council’s property and customer records accurate, ensuring discounts, exemptions and reliefs are awarded correctly, and identifying changes that need to be reported to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA)
The Revenues inspection function plays a vital role in supporting the Council’s financial resilience and ensuring that local taxation is applied fairly and accurately.
As a Revenues Inspector, you’ll manage a complex caseload from end to end, planning and completing visits, gathering evidence, maintaining clear records on Council systems, and producing high‑quality reports with recommendations for action. You’ll be trusted to make proportionate decisions using common sense, sound judgement and lawful grounds, in line with Council policies.
This is a role for someone who can balance professional curiosity with customer care — confident dealing with people in person (including contentious situations), while recognising vulnerability and signposting to support when needed.
Key Responsibilities
The postholder will be required to:
- Carry out inspections of domestic and non‑domestic properties, including new, altered, empty and occupied properties, and gather robust evidence such as photographs and detailed site notes.
- Identify new properties and circumstances that affect liability and ensure these are reported promptly to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).
- Serve Council Tax and Business Rates Completion Notices where appropriate, supporting the accuracy and integrity of both tax bases.
- Verify entitlement to discounts, exemptions and reliefs, including Single Person Discount, empty property exemptions and Disabled Band Reduction, ensuring awards are made in accordance with legislation and council policy.
- Prepare clear and detailed reports setting out inspection outcomes and recommendations, ensuring all visit records and council systems are updated accurately and in a timely manner.
- Where necessary, prepare statements and represent the Council at court or tribunal hearings.
- Carry out all duties safely and professionally, adhering at all times to lone working arrangements and personal safety procedures.
