Overview

The London Borough of Harrow is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Home Library Service Assistant to provide a vital service to housebound residents across the borough. This rewarding role involves managing the daily operations of the Home Library Service, coordinating all driving activities, and supporting the recruitment and engagement of volunteer drivers. You will be responsible for maintaining a well‑stocked and appealing collection of books and audio materials, ensuring that residents have access to resources that meet their interests and needs. A key part of the role includes promoting the service widely within the community and delivering materials directly to residents’ homes using the library van. You will play an important part in supporting services that align with broader Service, Department, and corporate priorities. A genuine passion for books and reading whether educational or recreational is essential, as is a commitment to delivering a friendly, reliable, and impactful service.


About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Clear verbal communication (spoken English to be satisfactorily clear for telephone calls).
  • Understanding of library provision to a multicultural society and people with disabilities.
  • Awareness of relevant library resources (e.g. children’s books, information materials etc) as required by a diverse community.
  • Understanding of maps.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel as a minimum) and the internet.
  • A current clean UK (or equivalent) driving licence.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to lift (up to 10lbs / 4.536 kilos weight.
