About the Haringey Pension Fund

The Haringey Pension Fund is part of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), one of the largest funded pension schemes in the UK. Haringey Council acts as the Administering Authority for the Fund, working on behalf of scheme members, employers and other stakeholders.

The Fund is overseen by the Pensions Committee and Local Pension Board, supported by experienced officers, professional advisers and investment specialists. The Fund works closely with London CIV as part of the LGPS asset pooling framework and is committed to maintaining robust governance, responsible investment practices and high standards of pension administration.

You will work closely with elected members, senior officers, advisers and external partners, bringing an independent perspective to support effective governance and informed decision-making at a time of significant change across the LGPS landscape.

About the Role

Haringey Council is seeking an experienced pensions professional to become the Independent Person for the Haringey Pension Fund. This is a newly established and influential governance role introduced in response to recent Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) governance reforms. As Independent Person, you will provide objective advice, scrutiny and constructive challenge to support the Pension Fund Committee, senior officers and the Fund’s asset pooling arrangements. Acting in a capacity similar to that of a Non-Executive Director or Professional Trustee, you will play a key role in strengthening governance and ensuring the Fund continues to operate in line with the highest standards of transparency, accountability and regulatory compliance.

You will help review and challenge advice presented to the Fund, contribute to the development of strategies and policies, monitor performance against Fund objectives and support the ongoing evolution of governance arrangements. The role also includes oversight of the Fund’s relationship with London CIV, helping ensure that investment decisions and pooling arrangements continue to serve the best interests of members and employers.

This is a non-voting position with no delegated decision-making powers, but it offers a valuable opportunity to influence the stewardship of a significant public sector pension fund and help safeguard the retirement benefits of thousands of scheme members.

Time Commitment

The expected annual commitment is approximately 20 days per year and will include:

  • Attendance at Pension Committee and Pension Board meetings.
  • Attendance at Investment and Governance Working Group meetings.
  • Engagement with London CIV and other LGPS stakeholders.
  • Meetings with senior officers and the Chair of the Pension Committee.
  • Participation in training and development sessions.
  • Providing advice and challenge between meetings where required.

Attendance at meetings in person will be expected as part of the role.

About You

We are looking for a highly credible pensions professional who can provide independent judgement, expert insight and constructive challenge. You will bring substantial experience within pension fund governance, pension fund investments, administration or regulation, ideally within the Local Government Pension Scheme environment.

You will be able to demonstrate:
• Significant experience of pension fund governance, investment or administration.
• A strong understanding of the LGPS regulatory framework and current sector developments.
• The ability to analyse complex technical issues and provide objective, evidence-based challenge.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work effectively with elected members, officers and professional advisers.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex matters clearly and concisely.
• A commitment to the highest standards of integrity, independence and professional conduct.

Applicants should ideally hold a relevant qualification from the Pensions Management Institute (PMI), be accredited by the Association of Professional Pension Trustees (APPT) or demonstrate equivalent senior-level knowledge and experience within the pensions sector.

Why Join Haringey?

This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the governance of a major Local Government Pension Scheme fund and help shape the future direction of pension fund management in Haringey. As Independent Person, you will contribute to protecting the long-term interests of scheme members and employers while helping the Fund navigate a rapidly evolving pensions landscape.
