Be at the Heart of Hackney

Are you looking for a career that actually means something? The Hackney Registration Service is looking for a dedicated apprentice to join our busy, welcoming team.

This isn’t just any admin job. You will be supporting residents through life’s most defining milestones—from the joy of a new baby or a wedding to the sensitive moments following a loss. No two days are ever the same, and you will be a calm, professional presence for people when they need it most.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us

  • Earn While You Learn: You’ll receive a competitive salary and holiday entitlement while you work toward a recognised professional qualification.
  • Stability to Grow: This is a 2-year fixed-term contract, giving you plenty of time to study and build your CV.
  • Real Responsibility: You’ll learn to manage digital bookings, handle legal documents, and eventually act as a Deputy Registrar to register births.
  • A Modern Approach: We want your fresh perspective and skills to help us modernise and streamline our existing processes. We are looking for someone tech-savvy who is confident using social media to help us connect with the community in new, digital ways.
  • Protected Study Time: We set aside one day of your working week specifically for your training and development.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an apprentice, you will perform tasks under supervision as you develop the competence to take on more responsibility. Your daily tasks will include:

Legal and Data Administration: Strictly adhering to Registration Acts and GRO guidelines to accurately input data for births, deaths, marriages, and civil partnerships into national systems.

  • Document Management: Producing legal certificates from current and historical records and managing physical archives by retrieving and re-filing historic registers.
  • Digital Organisation: Streamlining digital filing systems, organising electronic records, and guiding customers and residents through online self-service portals.
  • Customer Interaction: Handling sensitive enquiries via telephone, email and face-to-face, ensuring all communication is clear, confidential, and timely.
  • Financial Tasks: Managing transactions by collecting fees for services, issuing receipts, and reconciling payments.
  • Event and Diary Support: Managing the electronic diary for appointments and coordinating bookings for upcoming ceremonies.
  • Ceremony Support: Supporting the team with the administration of citizenship and ceremonies (including weddings and civil partnerships), and acting as an usher to manage the smooth flow of guests during the events.

Are You the Right Fit?

At Hackney, we do things differently. We aren’t looking for a finished product; we are looking for potential, passion, and a personality that fits our team.

  • A People Person: You need to be a polite and helpful person who has great communication skills and can build relationships with anyone.
  • Organised: You can prioritise tasks and have a strong eye for detail.
  • Tech-Savvy and Innovative: We want your fresh perspective! If you know your way around social media and digital tools, you can help us modernise how we connect with residents.
  • Ready to Grow: We will teach you all the technical and legal rules of registration while you earn your qualification.
  • Passionate: You care about the Hackney community and want to make a difference.
  • Reliable: You show up on time and are ready to learn.
