The Role

As a Housing Allocations Apprentice, you will play an important role in supporting our Housing Options Service.
This is a great opportunity to start a career in housing, develop strong customer service and administrative skills, and work towards a recognised qualification while earning.
You will work alongside experienced colleagues who will guide you through the processes we use to register applicants, assess their needs, and help people move one step closer to finding a home.
What you will be doing:
Supporting the housing allocations team with day‑to‑day administrative tasks, such as updating records, checking documents, and managing incoming information.
Helping to process new housing applications by checking eligibility, gathering evidence, and ensuring information is accurate and up to date. Providing friendly, accessible customer service by answering enquiries, explaining how the housing register works, and helping applicants understand the bidding process.
Assisting with preparing simple assessments and organising documents to support the team in making clear and informed decisions.
Updating housing systems, helping to advertise available properties, and working with internal teams and housing partners to keep processes running smoothly.
Taking an active role in your apprenticeship by completing training modules, building knowledge of housing services, and developing strong communication and administrative skills.
What you will learn
How social housing allocation works and how councils assess housing need.
How to deliver excellent customer service in a sensitive and supportive way.
Key administration skills, including data handling, record‑keeping, and using housing software systems.
How different teams across the council work together to support residents.
To support the Housing Options Service front line customer support service dealing with administrative tasks.
Essential qualifications/experience
Minimum of Level 2, GCSE or equivalent in English Language and Maths
Knowledge and understanding of office administrative duties.
Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
A good standard of numeracy and literacy and a willingness to work towards achieving a Business Administration Apprenticeship Level 3

Local Government Reorganisation
In April 2028 Local government in Kent is moving to a new unitary council structure. If you join us now, you will be employed by Gravesham Borough Council in the first instance, but staff are expected to transfer to the new organisation under TUPE arrangements in April 2028. This means your continuity of employment and existing terms and conditions will be protected.
