Senior Accountant (Strategic Projects)

Dover District Council

Dover Area£51,931 to £58,775 per annum (DDC Grade F)Full time37Closes: 2026-04-23

About the Role

Dover District Council is entering a period of significant transformation — from ambitious regeneration schemes to preparing for the future shape of local government. Our Finance team is central to making that change happen.

This newly focused Senior Accountant (Strategic Projects) role offers a rare opportunity to work at the heart of major corporate programmes, influencing decisions that affect services, communities and long‑term financial sustainability.

This is a senior, high‑impact role for an accountant who enjoys complexity, values collaboration and wants their work to genuinely shape outcomes rather than simply report on them.

What You’ll Do

As Senior Accountant (Strategic Projects), you’ll act as a trusted financial advisor, supporting senior leaders and councillors on some of the Council’s most important initiatives.

You’ll:

  • Lead the financial input into major strategic projects, including transformation programmes and local government reform
  • Provide clear, pragmatic financial advice that supports confident decision‑making at senior level
  • Own and manage complex financial models
  • Contribute to key corporate documents such as the Medium‑Term Financial Plan and Statement of Accounts
  • Work across the organisation, building strong relationships and influencing beyond the Finance team

This role offers broad exposure, responsibility and the chance to build a portfolio of genuinely strategic experience.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, thinking strategically and working collaboratively.

You do not need to meet every requirement — if this role aligns with your strengths and aspirations, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience in local government accounting and budgeting
  • Strong analytical and financial modelling skills
  • Confidence using financial systems and advanced Excel
  • The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non‑finance colleagues
  • Experience supporting or leading the financial aspects of change, transformation or complex projects
  • A positive, pragmatic and team‑focused approach, with a willingness to learn and challenge constructively

Qualifications

  • CCAB qualified or part‑qualified, or
  • Fully qualified AAT (or equivalent) with relevant professional experience

If you’re unsure whether you meet every criteria, we still encourage you to apply — we value potential, mindset and transferable skills.

Flexible & Inclusive Working

We’re committed to a genuinely accessible and inclusive recruitment experience.

We offer:

  • Hybrid working as standard
  • Flexible hours and support around caring or other commitments
  • Alternative assessment formats, clear interview processes and structured onboarding
  • No “hidden rules” — just tell us what adjustments you need

What We Can Offer

  • Local Government Pension Scheme (with AVC options)
  • Benenden Healthcare Membership and Employee Assistance Programme
  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Staff discount schemes, including reduced leisure centre membership
  • On‑site parking
  • A supportive, collaborative and professional working environment
  • Generous Salary Sacrifice car Scheme.

A Basic DBS check and BPSS check are required for this role.

A Final Note from Helen Lamb, Head of Finance & Investment
