Croydon Council is looking for a dedicated Welfare Rights Adviser to join our Financial Inclusion and Rent Accounting service. This is a key role supporting Council tenants across the borough—maximising household income, preventing rent arrears, and helping residents sustain their tenancies.
About the Role
As a Welfare Rights Adviser, you will:
- Provide high‑quality welfare benefits advice, ensuring residents receive their full benefit entitlement.
- Deliver expert casework on Housing Benefit, Universal Credit, disability benefits, Pension Credit, and more.
- Prepare and manage mandatory reconsiderations, appeals and tribunal submissions.
- Work closely with housing teams, social care, health partners, and voluntary sector organisations to support vulnerable residents.
- Prioritise and manage a busy caseload, making sound decisions based on legislation, guidance and individual needs.
- Identify income‑maximisation opportunities, including access to the new Crisis and Resilience Fund and other financial support schemes.
This role is essential in protecting tenancies, preventing financial hardship, and helping residents achieve stability.
About You
We’re looking for someone with:
- Substantial experience in Welfare Rights advice, including complex casework and appeals.
- Strong knowledge of welfare benefits legislation, Universal Credit rules, disability‑related benefits, and housing‑related support.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and empathetically.
- Analytical skills to interpret legislation, assess entitlement, and make robust decisions.
- Experience working with vulnerable residents, including those with disabilities, long‑term health conditions or mental health challenges.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
