Trainee Voids Surveyor

Career Grade 9–12

Build your surveying career – with a structured route to the full Grade 12 Voids Surveyor role.

This is a career-grade opportunity for someone with some relevant building, construction, property maintenance or repairs experience who wants to develop into a professional surveying role.

You’ll carry out real void surveying work from the start while developing your technical knowledge, qualifications, judgement and independence. As you demonstrate the requirements of each level, you can progress through Grades 10 and 11 to the full Grade 12 role.

The role

You’ll inspect empty Council homes, identify defects and repairs, prepare schedules of work and help make sure properties are returned to the required lettable standard as quickly and safely as possible.

You’ll work with contractors and Housing colleagues, monitor works, carry out post-inspections, maintain accurate records and develop your knowledge of construction, health and safety, CDM, schedules of rates, costs, quality and contractor performance.

What we’re looking for

You do not need to already be a fully qualified surveyor, but you will need some relevant practical experience or knowledge in building construction, property maintenance, repairs, a trade, surveying support or a comparable property-related environment. You should be able to communicate well, organise your workload, identify and record straightforward defects, solve practical problems and be committed to developing your technical knowledge and qualifications.

Your development

The career grade provides a structured pathway from Grade 9 to the substantive Grade 12 Voids Surveyor role. The complexity of your work, technical judgement and independence will increase as you progress. Progression is not automatic; it depends on demonstrating the required competence, qualifications, performance and independence at each level.
