About the Role
Croydon is a distinctive and diverse borough and the most populated in London. It is delivering its largest programme of development and regeneration since the 1960s, creating a positive and sustainable future for residents, businesses and visitors.
We are passionate about high‑quality public services, and our modern headquarters places the customer at the heart of everything we do. It brings together Council services and partners including the NHS, Jobcentre Plus, Croydon Credit Union and the Citizens Advice Bureau, enabling joined‑up and collaborative working. This is an exciting time to join Croydon Council, supporting vital services for over 360,000 residents.
This is a key senior role within the Streets and Environment Department. The Senior Flood Management and Drainage Engineer will lead flood risk and drainage management across the borough, supporting the Council’s flood resilience and climate adaptation objectives.
The post holder will act as the Council’s senior technical lead for flood risk, supporting Croydon’s statutory role as Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA). Duties include those under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, such as managing surface water, ordinary watercourses and groundwater flooding, coordinating flood risk activities and investigating significant flood events.
You will lead the delivery of flood management and drainage programmes, managing capital and revenue schemes from feasibility through to delivery. Responsibilities include budgets, contracts, programme performance and compliance with statutory and technical standards.
You will provide expert technical advice on flood risk and drainage, including acting as LLFA consultee on planning applications, reviewing Flood Risk Assessments and drainage strategies, and leading on Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) approvals. You will work closely with developers, internal teams, the Environment Agency, water companies and other partners, and represent the Council at technical and stakeholder forums.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and well‑organised Senior Engineer with significant experience in flood risk management and drainage, strong knowledge of LLFA responsibilities and the ability to protect communities and infrastructure from flooding.
Reporting to the Principal Engineer – Drainage and Flood Management, you will work closely with colleagues across the Streets and Environment Service in a demanding but rewarding role delivering real benefits for those who live and work in Croydon. The successful candidate will hold a relevant qualification and substantial post‑qualification experience.
