We're looking for a reliable, motivated, and proactive General Day Cleaner to help maintain one of London's most iconic wholesale markets.

This is more than a cleaning role. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, can work independently, uses their initiative, and understands the importance of maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for traders, visitors, and colleagues.

If you're someone who can identify what needs doing without being asked, enjoys working as part of a supportive team and is committed to high standards, we'd like to hear from you.

What you'll be doing

  • Carrying out daily cleaning duties across market buildings, communal areas, welfare facilities, and public spaces.
  • Operating a range of cleaning equipment, including scrubber dryers and pressure washers.
  • Collecting and disposing of waste safely and efficiently.
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness throughout the working day.
  • Supporting colleagues with operational tasks where required.
  • Following safe systems of work and using equipment correctly.
  • Identifying hazards and carrying out dynamic risk assessments before and during tasks.
  • Reporting maintenance issues, defects, hazards and health and safety concerns promptly.
  • Taking ownership of your work area and ensuring tasks are completed to a consistently high standard.

About you

We're looking for someone who:

  • Is a self-starter who can organise their workload and work with minimal supervision.
  • Is confident working independently while also contributing positively to a team.
  • Has previous cleaning experience in a commercial or industrial environment.
  • Takes pride in delivering high standards of cleanliness.
  • Has good awareness of health and safety and can assess risks while carrying out tasks.
  • Can identify problems and report them promptly using the appropriate channels.
  • Is physically able to undertake manual handling and the demands of an active role.
  • Is reliable, punctual, and committed to providing an excellent service.
  • Has a positive, can-do attitude and is willing to support colleagues when operational priorities change.

Why join us?

Working at Smithfield Market means becoming part of a historic and fast-paced environment where every day is different. You'll play an important role in keeping the Market operating safely and efficiently while working alongside a supportive team committed to delivering excellent standards.

Because our roles are so varied, we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ policy for workplace attendance. How many days a week you’ll be required to attend your workplace will depend on the requirements of your role. It’s important that you understand the requirements before applying to ensure you are able to meet them. We are committed to considering requests to work flexibly and job share. Requests will be considered by the recruiting manager in line with our policies and business needs.

For more information on our categories for workplace attendance, please view our guide here.

We will be reviewing this policy and approach at regular intervals to ensure we’re meeting our attendance needs.
