Billingsgate Market is the UK’s premier inland fish market and forms part of the City of London Corporation’s wholesale markets. Strategically located close to Canary Wharf in London, the market is internationally recognised for the sale of fish and fish products sourced from across the globe, with merchants collectively trading over 25,000 tonnes of fish each year. Billingsgate is home to a diverse range of fish and shellfish merchants, including specialist and catering suppliers, as well as potato and trade sundries suppliers. While traditionally operating as a wholesale market, recent years have seen a notable expansion in retail trade.

 

The City of London Corporation is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice to join the administrative team at Billingsgate Market. This role provides the opportunity to gain practical experience within a professional public-sector environment, supporting the effective administration and day-to-day operations of the market.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Act as a professional first point of contact for tenants, customers, and City of London Corporation staff, responding to enquiries via email, telephone, and in person.
  • Provide a range of administrative support services using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Assist with the preparation and raising of purchase orders for goods and services and support the processing of invoices in accordance with City of London Corporation financial procedures.
  • Support the monitoring and maintenance of car park records and liaise with the external contractor in relation to car park-related matters.
  • Assist with reconciling payments received by cash and cheque, ensuring all associated banking documentation is completed accurately and in line with corporate requirements.
  • Support the departmental newsletter and Billingsgate social media channels by liaising with tenants and staff to source and publish content.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Corporation to support effective service delivery and the smooth operation of the market.
  • Undertake and successfully complete all training and assessments associated with the Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship.

 

Hours and Location

 

The post is 35 hours per week, working Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 2.30pm.


This apprenticeship is based at Billingsgate Market, Trafalgar Way, London, E14 5ST and will run for 18 months, including time to complete the End Point Assessment.

To qualify for this apprenticeship, you will need to be:

 

•             16 or over by the end of the summer holidays

•             Living in England

•             Not in full-time education at the time of applying

            

If you are a non-UK citizen – you need to have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship.

 

Selected apprenticeships require evidence of English and Maths GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent.
