IT - Network and Infrastructure Engineer

The Infrastructure and Security team at Canterbury City Council are looking for a Network and Infrastructure Engineer to join them.

About this job
This role will play a key part in the ongoing maintenance of our existing network and infrastructure, and the modernisation of our technology and tools.
Here’s what you’ll get up to:
- Design, implement, operate and maintain network and infrastructure services that support the council’s digital and technology platforms.
- Support and contribute to the ongoing modernisation of the infrastructure estate, including cloud‑hosted platforms, identity‑led access models and SaaS integration.
- Build, configure and maintain infrastructure components across cloud, networking, identity, endpoint and core platform services.
- Operate and support infrastructure services in line with agreed standards, security controls and architectural direction.
- Participate in the delivery of infrastructure and platform change activity, including upgrades, migrations, improvements and decommissioning of legacy services.
- Monitor the health, performance, availability and resilience of infrastructure services, taking action to resolve issues and prevent recurrence.
- Support disaster recovery, backup and resilience arrangements, including documentation, testing and continuous improvement.
Working pattern
- Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays
- Full time, permanent contract (37 hours per week)
- The team operates a flexible hybrid working model. Normally you will be in the office at least once per week, but this may vary depending on the team’s workload and the projects you’re working on. We recognise the benefits of smarter working practices that enable us to maximise productivity.
- Occasionally, you might need to work out of hours for system maintenance or upgrades.
About you
Your knowledge
- Strong practical knowledge of modern infrastructure and networking technologies, including cloud platforms, virtualisation, networking and identity services.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft cloud technologies, particularly Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, and their use in enterprise environments.
- Strong understanding of cloud and software‑defined networking concepts, connectivity, segmentation and access control.
- Strong knowledge of identity, authentication and access controls as core components of infrastructure design.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure security principles, including secure configuration, monitoring and resilience.
Your experience
- Experience supporting infrastructure services through change, including upgrades, migrations and platform transitions.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure and networking issues.
- Experience working within structured change, incident and problem management processes.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a technical team and across service boundaries.
Your qualifications
- Degree‑level education in a relevant technical discipline or equivalent practicalexperience in a network or infrastructure engineering environment.
