We are seeking an experienced and driven Head of Environmental Health & Licensing to lead critical public protection services that safeguard our communities and support sustainable growth.
This is a senior leadership role with both strategic and operational responsibility, acting as the professional lead for Environmental Health and Licensing and deputising for the Assistant Director (Public Protection) when required.
About the role
You will have overall responsibility for the delivery, performance and development of a broad portfolio of statutory and regulatory services, including:

Environmental Health and Protection

Food Hygiene and Safety
-
Licensing
-
Private Rented Sector Housing Enforcement
-
Environmental Enforcement, nuisance, ASB and related functions
Leading an established management team and around 30 staff, you will ensure services are high performing, customer focused, legally compliant and deliver best value. You will manage a service budget of approximately £2.15m, lead transformation and change programmes, and play a key role in shaping wider corporate priorities across Environment & Public Protection.
What you’ll be responsible for

Providing strategic and operational leadership across Environmental Health and Licensing services

Deputising for the Assistant Director (Public Protection) as required

Ensuring all statutory functions are delivered effectively and lawfully

Leading transformation, service improvement and cross divisional initiatives

Managing complex budgets, performance and resources

Representing the Council with members, partners, regulators and external agencies

Supporting elected members through committee work and professional advice
What we’re looking for
You will be a confident, credible leader with significant experience operating at a senior level within a local authority or similarly complex organisation. You’ll bring:

A degree and/or professional qualification, preferably in Environmental Health
-
Substantial experience of leading Public Protection or regulatory services

A strong understanding of the challenges facing local government
-
Proven experience of strategy development, service transformation and change management

A successful track record of managing performance, budgets and multidisciplinary teams
-
Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills
-
A collaborative leadership style with a commitment to equalities and continuous improvement
