Project Manager

Bristol City Council

City Hall College Green City Centre Bristol BS1 5TRBG13: £48,738 - £51,928Full time37

This will be an initial 12-month fixed term contract

Bristol City Council is looking for experienced Project Managers to deliver important change projects across the organisation.

Our Portfolios, Programmes and Projects service helps turn the council’s strategic priorities into well-designed, deliverable change. Working alongside service managers, subject-matter experts, technical specialists and partners, you will help take projects from early ideas and business-case development through to implementation and benefits realisation.

We are looking for rounded project professionals - not simply people who can manage a plan.

You will bring strong organisation, sound judgement and effective project controls, while recognising that successful delivery also depends on people, engagement and organisational change. You will be comfortable working through ambiguity, building constructive relationships and helping teams create shared ownership of change.

Areas of work

We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates with experience working in any of the following areas:

  1. Technology-enabled change, including supporting the procurement, implementation or re-platforming of systems and applications, with an understanding of technical delivery and a strong focus on service outcomes, business readiness, process change, colleague engagement and adoption.

  1. Organisational design and workforce change, including supporting reviews of organisational structures, accountabilities, management layers and spans of control; working with workforce and budget data; applying consistent design principles; and helping services test and implement changes that support sustainable service delivery and improved outcomes.

  1. Service redesign and improvement, including supporting user-centred reviews of services and processes; using insight, data and technology to identify and deliver improvements; coordinating multidisciplinary activity; and helping test, implement and embed changes that make services easier to access, simpler to run and more financially sustainable.

What you will bring

  • Experience of managing change projects through the full lifecycle, with responsibility for day-to-day planning, coordination and delivery.
  • The ability to turn agreed priorities and managers’ ideas into clear outcomes, practical plans and well-controlled projects.
  • Strong skills in planning, scheduling, risk, issue, dependency, financial and benefits management, with the judgement to respond constructively when delivery does not go to plan.
  • Confidence coordinating multidisciplinary teams and building effective relationships with stakeholders at different levels and across professional boundaries.
  • A collaborative and adaptable approach, with a genuine commitment to involving the people who will deliver, use and experience the change.

You will work in a fast-paced delivery environment where you can make a tangible difference by helping the organisation achieve practical and lasting outcomes.

How to apply

Please send us your CV (maximum two A4 pages) and a supporting statement of no more than 1,000 words. Using practical examples, show how you meet the following criteria:

  1. Project delivery: Experience of managing projects in a change environment, with practical knowledge of recognised project and change approaches and the ability to apply proportionate controls across the project lifecycle.
  2. Turning ideas into delivery: Evidence of translating agreed priorities or service needs into clear outcomes, realistic plans and coordinated activity.
  3. Managing delivery: Demonstrable use of planning, sequencing, risk, issue and dependency management to maintain progress and respond effectively when circumstances change.
  4. Working through people: Evidence of building effective relationships, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and supporting the people and business change needed for successful implementation - not only the technical project controls.
