Bristol City Council is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Team Leader to lead our Business Rates service. This is an excellent opportunity to join our Revenues team and play a key role in delivering a vital public service.
Our team is responsible for the billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates across more than 16,000 hereditaments, a large and most diverse Business Rates portfolios in the country. As Team Leader, you will help ensure the service operates efficiently, supports local businesses and delivers excellent outcomes for the city.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced officer looking to broaden their leadership experience, influence service development and build skills that support future career progression within Revenues and Local Government.

What you'll be doing
As Business Rates Team Leader, you will lead a small, experienced team and oversee the delivery of a high-quality service. You will work closely with the Revenues Manager to ensure legislative compliance, maintain service standards and drive continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading, motivating and developing a team to deliver an effective and customer-focused Business Rates service.
- Overseeing the accurate billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates.
- Monitoring service performance, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing changes to enhance efficiency.
- Providing coaching, guidance and technical support to team members.
- Resolving complex cases, complaints and technical queries, applying detailed knowledge of Business Rates legislation and practice.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
- Supporting the Revenues Manager in developing policies, service improvements and operational initiatives.
- Building positive relationships with colleagues, businesses and external partners.
About you
We're looking for someone with:
- Proven experience in a Business Rates environment, with detailed knowledge of relevant legislation and processes.
- Experience of leading, supervising or developing staff.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- A passion for delivering excellent customer service and improving service outcomes.
You will be a confident and approachable leader who can support and develop others while maintaining a strong focus on performance, accuracy and continuous improvement.
What we offer
The salary for this role is £39,862 to £41,771 per annum (pro rata if part-time). For exceptional candidates with significant relevant experience, a higher starting salary within the grade may be considered.
